Quando, durante gli anni dell'università, scoprii l'esistenza della «filosofia della musica» pensai che si trattasse di qualcosa che avevo iniziato a coltivare, inconsapevolmente, già durante l'adolescenza, quando rimanevo incantato dall'emozionante - e per me un po' enigmatica - armonia d'apertura del III movimento della Sesta di Beethoven e seguivo quasi con trepidazione i volteggi della sincopata melodia dell'oboe, cercando di capire che rapporto ci fosse tra il programma «pastorale» di quell'opera e la musica. L'esigenza di trovare parole in grado di comprendere e spiegare l'intrico e la fascinazione che la musica esercita sull'anima mi accompagna fin da allora. Ma ricordo benissimo che il primo vero incontro con la musica avvenne molti anni prima, per caso, alla radio, durante l'infanzia. Seduto sul divano, in un pigro pomeriggio, venni investito dalle vorticose terzine iniziali della "Notte sul Monte Calvo" di Musorgskij con ciò che ne seguiva. Ne rimasi letteralmente terrorizzato. E scoprii una delle prodigiose caratteristiche della musica, il cui linguaggio - perfino nei silenzi espressivi - assomiglia così tanto al nostro ma la cui intenzione profonda eternamente ci sfugge: essa sembra riuscire a comprenderti perfino quando ti lascia ammutolito. Di fronte a un'opera musicale, tanto gli esecutori quanto gli ascoltatori sono chiamati a compiere un'attività di ordine squisitamente interpretativo, volta alla comprensione di un senso da riprodurre esecutivamente o da cogliere uditivamente. Ciò mette in evidenza un aspetto fondamentale della musica, così spesso sottolineato dai diversi autori che negli ultimi cinquant'anni si sono occupati di filosofia e teoria dell'interpretazione: Betti, Pareyson, Gadamer, Jauss, Vattimo. Dalla riflessione ermeneutica contemporanea emergono molteplici problematiche: sui criteri da adottare per comprendere il senso musicale, sul rapporto che si instaura tra opera e interprete, sull'eventuale natura linguistica della musica.

La musica nell'estetica fenomenologica
br. Non sono rare le occasioni in cui l'estetica fenomenologica si è occupata di argomenti musicali. Se Edmund Husserl ha dedicato solo qualche osservazione al suono e alla musica, riflessioni più ampie vengono in proposito da alcuni suoi allievi: Conrad, Ingarden e Schütz. L'attenzione di questi autori si concentra su tematiche di natura essenzialmente filosofica: lo statuto ontologico ed estetico dell'oggetto musicale, il problema dell'identità di un'opera, le caratteristiche della temporalità in musica. Ne risultano una serie di considerazioni di squisito ordine teoretico, ricche però di conseguenze anche in ambito musicologico.

L'esistenza di un collegamento fra la nostra musica e quella dell'antico Egitto è già un valido motivo per conoscere quanto gli egizi sapevano dell'arte dei suoni e come la mettevano in pratica. Per meglio addentrarsi in questo campo, il saggio si apre ricordando i principi fisici della musica, entrando poi nello specifico. L'autore si è basato sui reperti archeologici, sulle immagini con le loro didascalie, sulla sperimentazione di modelli appositamente costruiti e ne ha evidenziato la tecnica di esecuzione, la resa sonora e il metodo usato per una corretta intonazione. Gli egizi individuarono gli intervalli fondamentali, costruirono empiricamente una scala musicale eptafonica, ossia una scala composta da una successione fissa di toni e semitoni, utilizzabile per comporre le più diverse melodie. La scarsa conoscenza della fonetica della lingua egizia, l'ignoranza della metrica e l'assenza di una notazione musicale non consentono di farsi un'idea esatta né dei ritmi né delle melodie usate per liturgie, canti e danze. Non sono mancate difficoltà sull'intonazione dei cordofoni, riscontrate anche negli analoghi strumenti greci, ma ciò diventa uno stimolo a proseguire nella ricerca.
