The Warriors
<p>Grainger's extraordinary work described as "Music to an Imaginary Ballet" was prompted by a request from the English conductor Thomas Beecham to compose a ballet score for the Diaghilev company. The commission never materialized but Grainger nevertheless proceeded to create a his most adventuresome work to date - employing a large orchestra with an expanded percussion section and three pianos requiring three conductors for coordination. The world premiere for the now imaginary ballet took place in December 1919 with the composer on a piano plus the Chicago Symphony conducted by Frederick Stock. The new digitally-enhanced study score offered here has been reproduced from the "compressed full score" issued in 1926 under the composer's name by B. <p>Inspired by Canto V of the "Inferno" of Dante's "Divine Comedy" Tchaikovsky initially planned to create an opera on the subject but abandoned the idea in favor the present 24-minute fantasia for orchestra in 1876. Bearing all the hallmarks of the composer's late romantic style "Francesca da Rimini" takes full advantage of the powerful orchestral forces employed. The first performance was given on March 9 1877 in Moscow with the RMS Orchestra conducted by Nikolay Rubinstein. This is a new digitally enhanced reissue of the score originally published around 1900 in Leipzig by Ernst Eulenburg. </p> Serenissima Music, Inc. paperback

<p>Newly edited and engraved. The composer considered an orchestral suite from his great ballet but never got around to extracting it. An unknown editor compiled the first version which was issued by Jurgenson in 1900. The Soviet state publishers produced their own version in 1954 adding 3 dance movements and omitting the finale from the original suite.
