‎2 pp.n.ch., impression sur papier citron.Cet opéra larmoyant fut créé à Paris dans la Salle Favart de l'Opéra-Comique le 4 février 1853 sous la direction de Théophile Tilmant. L'oeuvre sera jouée plus de 1400 fois sur la scène de la Salle Favart jusqu'en 1953. Il faut dire que le thème parle à un grand nombre de spectateurs, prompts à l'attendrissement facile : dans un village de la campagne française la plus profonde, Jean, un jeune paysan sans famille, resté célibataire et d'une innocence angélique, s’est amouraché d’une fille sage et charmante, Jeannette, qui l’aime aussi et a accepté de l’épouser. Un vrai conte de fées. Mais une fois devant le maire et le notaire, le promis est pris d’une soudaine crainte du mariage et il fuit la cérémonie avant d'avoir dit oui. Jeannette paraît : elle veut savoir pourquoi il a changé d’avis. Jean avoue que la peur du mariage en est la cause et comme elle paraît prendre les choses du bon côté, il part rejoindre ses amis au cabaret. Lorsqu'elle le voit embrasser d'autres filles du village, Jeannette jure de se venger de cet homme qu'elle aime pourtant toujours. Tout cela parlait (et parle encore) aux habitués du monde rural .‎

Il fut créé le 25 septembre 1834 à l'Opéra-Comique dans la Salle de la Bourse. Cette œuvre qui influença Offenbach connut un long et vif succès dans ce même théâtre ; elle atteignit les 500 représentations en 1851, la millième en 1873 et 1500e en 1922.On comprend pourquoi, tant le thème est susceptible de plaire à tous genres de publics et d'émouvoir la ménagère de plus ou moins cinquante ans : la scène se passe tout entière à l’intérieur d'un chalet, ouvert à l'arrière avec une vue sur la campagne, et à distance, les montagnes de l'Appenzell en Suisse. Italian librettos were translated into German owing to the growing popularity of opera in Germany during the last decade of the 18th century; contemporary to Mozart’s death in 1791. Mozart immediately accepted at least the title under which on of his works would become known in the German-speaking countries: writing home on 3 October 1790 he reported “on Tuesday the theatrical company of the elector of Mainz are performing my Don Juan.” German communities variously received Mozart’s operas; the battle between the aristocratic and bourgeois audiences raged to and fro.
