Al centro della scena, un momento storico, epocale: il passaggio del Rubicone, il momento che, nel 49 a. C., segnò l'inizio delle guerre civili, la fine della Repubblica romana, l'inizio dell'Impero. Paolo Turroni, con l'aiuto di Franco Dell'Amore, che ha contribuito con un saggio alla stesura di questa ricerca, è andato a riportare alla luce quattro libretti, testimonianze di un tempo oramai remoto. In assenza della parte musicale, purtroppo per ora non rintracciabile, il volume analizza le biografie degli autori, collocandoli nel tempo in cui vissero e operarono, e riporta non solo i testi delle quattro opere, ma anche altro materiale documentario, risultando la ricerca più ampia oggi disponibile su questo specifico tema. Il volume è promosso dall'associazione "Pro Rubicone" di Cesena, attiva sul territorio dal 1991.

Da piccolo, Marco Tutino ascolta Beethoven e Vivaldi in braccio al papà, da ragazzo ama i Beatles e i Rolling Stones (per non parlare di Lucio Battisti), da giovane è indeciso tra fare il cantautore folk, l'attore brechtiano, il militante politico o il flautista. Ma la folgorazione arriva una sera dei primissimi anni Settanta durante la quale, dalla piccionaia della Scala, i congiurati di Un ballo in maschera gli sussurrano i loro intenti malvagi donandogli la più forte delle emozioni. È in quel momento che sveste i panni del dilettante per scegliere il «mestiere» della sua vita, quello di far vibrare l'aria. In queste pagine, uno dei più importanti compositori del panorama italiano contemporaneo racconta la passione per il suo lavoro, la genesi delle sue opere e i segreti del palcoscenico, le scelte tecniche e le fatiche organizzative che stanno dietro un singolo allestimento o una stagione teatrale, gli incontri felici e i feroci scontri con il potere, in tutte le sue incarnazioni. Mentre la sua storia di musicista e di sovrintendente poco avvezzo ai compromessi si intreccia con la storia nazionale, sfilano le grandi opere antiche e moderne che compongono il grande repertorio lirico, complete di istruzioni per l'uso. E, tra le righe, affiora la danza gioiosa e leggera della creazione artistica, fatta di ispirazione e di artigianato, di rigore e di abbandono, di piccole, improvvise illuminazioni.
