Ridere, si ride parecchio, anche in maniera sguaiata, perché le storie raccontate in queste pagine sono assolutamente irresistibili. Però mentre si ride si riesce anche a pensare, perché queste pagine non sono di finzione, raccontano cose incredibilmente vere, e proprio questo aumenta il loro carico esplosivo di comicità. Pensavamo che Il dottor Stranamore di Stanley Kubrick fosse frutto della fantasia di un regista geniale, invece Houghton ci dimostra che la storia è del tutto plausibile, anzi, forse è persino un po' edulcorata. Nella realtà è successo anche di peggio. "Il pipistrello bomba" parla di missioni segrete, di piani tattici, di armi innovative e di tutto ciò che le migliori menti di un paese in guerra sono riuscite a concepire nel disperato tentativo di difendere la propria nazione. Tutti conosciamo la storia del Progetto Manhattan e della costruzione della prima bomba atomica, ma quello che non sappiamo sono gli innumerevoli piani alternativi, pensati, studiati, valutati e infine scartati. Sono loro i protagonisti di questo libro, gli improbabili piani militari che hanno avuto almeno per un breve periodo una reale chance di essere realizzati, salvo poi venire scartati perché giudicati troppo pericolosi, troppo costosi, troppo avanti rispetto ai tempi o, più spesso, semplicemente troppo demenziali. Nel 1958 l'aeronautica militare americana voleva sganciare una bomba atomica sulla Luna per mostrare ai russi la potenza bellica statunitense. Nel 1967 la CIA voleva impiantare un'apparecchiatura ricetrasmittente nei gatti, da usare come spie in territorio sovietico. Nel 1942 gli inglesi volevano costruire un'intera portaerei fatta di ghiaccio e segatura, mentre gli americani volevano fare una bomba fatta di pipistrelli vivi, da sganciare sul Giappone. Questo libro raccoglie ventiquattro progetti militari mai realizzati e li racconta nel dettaglio, attraverso ricerche d'archivio approfondite e raccapriccianti. La scrittura non può che essere ironica, dato il tenore quasi lisergico di certe invenzioni, ma dalla lettura di queste pagine esce anche uno spaccato di storia militare della Seconda guerra mondiale e delle Guerra fredda che lascia a bocca aperta.
