Thénard, complet en lui-même sur la chimie végétale et la chimie animale, avec de très nombreuses informations précieuses pour des disciplines comme la parfumerie, la teinture, la fermentation alcoolique, les phénomènes de transformation de la matière chez les animaux‎

Découvreur du bleu de cobalt qui porte son nom, le baron Thénard (1777-1857) collaborera avec Gay-Lussac ; il isole le silicium et découvre l'eau oxygénée et le bore. Devant le succès des leçons de chimie qu'il professait au Collège de France, "le professeur comprit la nécessité de rédiger ses leçons. Elle parurent en quatre volumes, dont la première édition date de 1813 et la sixième et dernière de 1836. Chacune de ces éditions fut un très sérieux travail, où l'auteur intercala les progrès et les opinions qui se firent jour. Ce livre a régné seul dans les écoles pendant plus de vingt-cinq ans.
