Album showing the development of "Flying A" Gas Stations from San Jose to Los Angeles
<em><strong>Silver prints 158; 3 x 5 and 7 x 9 inches; Some with identifying locations recto and others with photographer's hand stamp verso.</strong></em> This compelling photo album compiled between 1948 and 1957 offers a view into the rapid development of roadside infrastructure that took place in California during the transformative period of post-war prosperity.<br /><br />As California experienced a surge in car ownership and a growing reliance on automobiles for transportation the need for accessible and conveniently located gas stations became increasingly apparent. The album shows how Associated Oil Company by this time a subsidiary of Tidewater Oil owned by Getty strategically positioned their now-iconic "Flying A" gas stations to cater to the burgeoning market up and down the West Coast. This album presents prospective locations some depicted with realtors' advertising boards scenes of construction and improvements and views of recently completed service stations spanning from the Southern Bay Area to Los Angeles.<br /><br />The album is mostly un-captioned with just a few prints having notations on the rectos but many scenes are identifiable by the signage of local businesses and vehicles or the sharp and visible street-signs. Some identifiable locations include: San Jose Saratoga Los Gatos San Marino Canoga Avenue in Woodland Hills and Nordhoff & Terra Bella Streets in Los Angeles among numerous others.<br /><br />A fantastic album which captures the relationship between changing consumer needs swiftly-increasing land development and the iconic roadside gas stations that have become synonymous with California's roadside landscape.

A number of articles focus on the development of the oil industry products for aviation fuels and the aircraft including one article on a trip in the “Rio Grande†Ford Tri-motor owned by the Rio Grande Oil Company. At the time Southern California was producing one-quarter of the World’s oil supply. San Diego CA: Shell Building San Diego Exposition 1935. One oblong atlas folio map. 32 x 22 in. Double-sided colour lithograph pictorial map with inset colour illustrations on verso of History of San Diego fold creases as issued light age toning at fore-edges very minor edgewear w/ original mailing envelope from the “Shell Building†at the CPIE toning to envelope NF/VG- copy mailed to Miss Gladys Buckman 1920-2011 in Long Beach CA from her brother Loren M. Buckman 1913-1995 who at the time was stationed on the USS Northampton CL/CA 26 US Navy Cruiser sunk later in 1942 at the Battle of Tassafaronga repelling Japanese from reinforcing troops on Guadalcanal. First edition of this scarce and beautifully rendered pictorial map celebrating the very successful California Pacific International Exposition held in San Diego over two years at the depths of the Great Depression to revive the Southern California economy which featured a number of unusual concessions and exhibits such as the Gold Gulch Lost Continent of Mu the Zoro Garden Nudist Colony and the “One Ton Mechanical Man.†Several of the exhibits used at the recently closed Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago 1933-1934 were re-used for the CPIE. This map reminiscent of the work of Jo Mora looks Eastward from a high point above the Pacific Ocean depicting San Diego from La Jolla to Oneonta and inland up to Cuyamaca Dam. Many of the buildings developed the architect Requa’s 1881-1941 “Southern California Architecture†style drawing upon the historical architecture of the Colonial Mexico the Pueblos of the Southwest and the Moorish features from Spain and North Africa and preserved the popular buildings which are still evident in Balboa Park. Bloodgood 1896-1989 was an illustrator cartoonist and map maper who produced a substantial body of pictorial maps from 1935-1968 for Shell Oil and the Pic-Tour Guide Series with this one being distributed from the Shell Building exhibit at the CPIE. Of additional interest are the several articles directed towards the fallout from the Teapot Dome Scanda the Panamerican Oil Co. Doheny Fall & Sinclair and court decision analyses. The large folding map of the Baldwin Hills Oil Field by Walker Clute and Samuel Perry is quite scarce not only offering a plat map of oil leases and lease holders in the record breaking oil field but coupled with an article touting the Inglewood Oil Field. The card binder bears the details of the Australian branch of Caltex but the sectional contents are published by the parent company in Texas.</p> <p>From the preface: 'this aircraft lubrication guide contains complete instructions covering the periodic lubrication of this model of aircraft. This guide does not cover lubrication of various items such as accessories which is performed at the time of major overhaul of each component. The arrangement of this guide is divided into various section of the aircraft such as landing gear power plant etc in order that the work may be subdivided among various groups of mechanics and to facilitate tying in with normal inspection and line maintenance procedures.'. Very Good Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In Turkish. 191, [1] p., 1 folded huge map (39x75 cm). Tatbikî jeoloji I: Jeolojik harta [sic. harita] alma usulleri. Enver Necdet Egeran was born in Cyprus in 1907. He, High school education in Cyprus, High Mining Engineering in Turkey, the Mineral and Petroleum Geology High Engineering and PhD in the same subject, completed in France. He was sent to France by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He served in the bureaucracy for 25 years, led the Mining and Petroleum exploration and made the first oil available in Raman. After retiring from the state, after being the General Manager of an American oil company for 12 years, he managed his own consulting company for 23 years. Rare. Only one copy in OCLC 850735753 (Istanbul Technical University).

no place: ESSO / Standard Oil Company 1940. Staplebound. Fair-good. Octavo 32pp. illustrated. A fair to good copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. Page block while intact is separated from the wrappers and laid in. Some stains juvenile pencil writing and chips and short tears to extremities but a complete readable copy. A volume of recipes purportedly by "Aunt Julia" an "Aunt Jemima"-style stereotype of a Black female cook this volume was almost certainly written or compiled by white staff of the Standard Oil Company. A ehite box on the front wrap contains the details of Wisenhunt's Esso Station in Spartanburg South Carolina. Likely these kinds of cook books were sold at various Esso stations throughout the American south and elsewhere. Though probably produced in large numbers we located just a handful of separately listed holdings in OCLC. Though undated there are a few advertising images of automobiles whhich were cetainly produced before World War II. Uncommon. [ESSO / Standard Oil Company] unknown

Folio. 11.5 x 14.25 in. 5 large oversize folding leaves of typed descriptions measurements specifications; mounted 7 linen-backed photo leaves 2 folding -- w/ 39 images printed on 34 silver gelatin photos. Original split-pin post-binder blue silk red cloth corners brass split pins minor edgewear rubbing minor fraying to corners first typed leaf w/ creasing minor closed tears still a VG exemplar from the library of John W. Jackson former Marketing & Sales executive with Gulf Oil Corporation Tulsa OK. This spectacular packaging catalogue for Gulf Oil Company petroleum products in the 1920s provides an incomparable photographic reference for all of the available products their dimensions sizes specific directions about tin lithograph colours as well as the cardboard and wooden shipping crates. Gulf Oil Corporation was initially organized in May 1901 by J.M. Guffy Andrew W. Mellon and others. By 1907 they had built a 400-mile pipeline from Port Arthur to the Glenn Pool Field in Oklahoma and started refining Oklahoma crude by 1907. By the 1920s this integrated Oil Company had built service stations across the country sold Good Gulf Gasoline and actively promoted automobile travel with Gulf Maps marketing promotions and more. This catalogue begins with photos of 1 5 10 and 25 lb. tins of Gulf Supreme Grease Transmission Grease Red Top Axle Grease Gulf Petrol-atum Gulf High Pressure Grease and Gulf Lubricant with all of the product tins carefully sized by stack showing their side graphics sizes lids and lid configurations. The oil cans include Tractor Oil Auto Oil Harvester Oil Gulf Motorcycle Oil small illustration of 1920s era motorcycle with Gulf Logo and even the blank tin soldered cans of assorted sizes. Of particular interest are the images of all the specialty products Gulf Oil was marketing during the Flapper Era including Venom pesticide & bug killer in glass bottles with screw-top tin lids & corks; Gulf Gas-o-Clenz cans in 1/2 pint 1 pint 1 quart and 1 gallon sizes; Gulf Gleam Cans Gulf Jelly Clens tubes Gulf Grease tubes and more. The last group of photos show all of the varieties of Gulf Venom Jelly-Clenz Gulf Pressure Grease Gulf Gleam cardboard and wooden packaging complete with printed labels lithograph labels Venom hand-sprayers and packaging and crates in assorted sizes and amounts. Chromolithographic map of the Arabian Peninsula from Turkey in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south and covering Saudi Arabia Egypt Israel Palestine Jordan Syria Lebanon Iraq Iran Kuwait Bahrain Qatar United Arab Emirates Oman North and South Yemen. Scale 1:5000000. Scale and key in Hebrew inset to top-right inset explanatory panels in Hebrew and English compass rose in Saudi Arabia. Extremely rare Israeli strategic map of the Arabian Peninsula showing oilfields and associated infrastructure. Printed in black red and blue the map demarks the political boundaries of the time along with the areas covered by oil companies concessions. Pipelines form a web across the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula shown in an uncommon vertical orientation while oilfields and refineries large and small are also marked. The IDF probably made the map in responce to the 1956 Suez Crisis and its associated geopolitical shifts. With the Egyptians operating the Suez Canal and the USA forcing Britain and France to abandon their post-imperial plans Israel now counted in both U.S. and Soviet plans for their control of Middle Eastern politics. Britain had to anchor its Middle Eastern influence in Cyprus Aden and Iraq while the increased American influence can be seen in the huge swathe of territory assigned to Aramco. We have located only one institutional copy of this map in the National library of Israel.With traces of pins from former wall mounting. A couple of small light stains some uneven creasing and tears at the edges of some folds and a couple tiny holes where the folds cross. Otherwise in good condition. Grizzly Adams came West in 1849 and forsook the gold mines for life in the Western and California wilderness where he acquired a legendary reputation for hunting grizzly bears and fending off Indians. Cover panel offers title actors manager etc. as well as printed in red ink on the right side front carries the notice "8th Street Theatre - - Grand Opening Week Commencing Monday September 4th" which would most likely have been 1882. The second panel offers a full-page advertisement for Merchant's Gargling Oil the company sponsoring the show. Merchant's Gargling Oil is “a Liniment for Man and Beast" a catch-all salve first produced by George W. Merchant a druggist in 1833. The salve was made up of petroleum soap ammonia water oil of amber iodine tincture benzine and water and supposedly would cure anything . burns scalds scratches foot rot on sheep roup in poultry hemorrhoids toothaches etc. Panel 3 offers general information about the play followed by a synopsis for all three acts. The rear panel offers a full-page woodcut illustration showing Adams on horseback rescuing innocent settlers in the wilderness from Indians. 1 1/2" closed tear to fold and with a 1" closed tear to side panels. New York: Wm. A. Pond 1865. Folio 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Fine condition. Fine. An unusual use of sheet music as satire with the lithographed cover showing a fake stock certificate. The cover - engraved by Major & Knapp - advertises an ownership share in the Spondolix Petroleum company and states that F.B. Helmsmuller who was actually a noted composer was the “Treasurer and General Manager†of the company. This is a particularly fine example of the piece. In our research we found several references to this piece as being a real stock certificate for a real company however this is clearly a parody of the oil business. This was printed in 1865 when the Pennsylvania oil industry was booming and the engraved illustration appears to show a countryside scene in Pennsylvania or somewhere similar. Four copies in OCLC. N.p. 1901. About very good. 12pp. Original printed wrappers stapled. Minor edge wear. Light toning and dust soiling. Scarce promotional for this early 20th-century New Mexico oil venture. The text contains an amusing if dangerous sounding origin story for the company in which the founding officer ignites a brook covered in a "peculiar scum" and spooks his horse. The remainder of the text contains the usual inducements to invest including various descriptions statistics analyses and endorsements. The first commercial well in New Mexico was drilled in the early twenties and we find little additional information on the Eureka Oil Company. One other copy located at SMU. unknown

Colour-illustrated softcovers bound into simulated black calf gilt lettering stamped on front cover rounded corners minor shelfwear rubbing still VG copies of both from the library of Andrew Edward MacMeekin 1884-1949 who was the purchasing manager for Standard Oil of Indiana at the main offices in Chicago IL from before World War I to his death w/ his ownership stamp on front cover of the Stanolind vol. First editions of these very scarce Standard Oil Company Indiana sales publications by one of the independent oil companies to emerge after the breakup of Standard Oil in 1911. Standard Oil Indiana pioneered the “cracking†process for refining crude oil under pressure resulting in far higher yields of gasoline and the many byproducts and by the mid-1920s was the third largest oil refiner in the U.S. behind Standard Oil New Jersey and Standard Oil California. This very scarce salesman’s advertising manual was created for distribution around the time that Standard Indiana had merged with the American Oil Co. Amoco and was looking to streamline both their purchasing and marketing pitches to service stations wholesalers and jobbers. The manual continually extolls the product diversity and reach of the Standard Indiana Company with Sinclair Dixie Pan-American Petroleum and Midwest Refining as subsidiaries the extensive fleet of oil tankers railroad tank cars and chain of service stations. The splendid sample catalogues encompass a range of styles and products including Red Crown gasoline featuring an Art Deco cover of a Standard Oil service station; the high octane Red crown Gasoline; Neolite kerosene for more efficiently and economically raising poultry; competing motor oils of Iso-Vis and Polarine designed for Ford engines; as well as Mica Axle Grease used to coat hog scratching poles; Merusol Petrolatum White petrolatum used as a non-stick coating for bakeries and with a number of “medical†applications as well or the KIP insecticide used for everything from ants and flies to bed bugs and mosquitoes. Also included are customer sales letters sample thank you letters sales goals tips and more. The second volume focuses on an extended article by MacMeekin on the Standard Indiana purchasing department which at the end of the 1920s was spending over $ 50 million a year on 14000 different items ranging from rare Asian flowers to wax from the head of whales pins by the ton locomotives and everything else to fuel the massive oil company. Individual chapters are devoted to the oil industry in Iran Iraq Bahrein Saudi Arabia Haifa Israel and Kuwait describing the area's geology oil fields reservoirs and more illustrated with photographs and cross-sections of the soil. The first 25 and last 16 pages consist of advertisements. An interesting souvenir photo album marking the retirement of a Shell Oil executive from the Shellburn Oil Refinery which remains the sole operating refinery in British Columbia and when it was constructed was one of North America’s most modern oil refineries. The images depict the refinery on Burrard Inlet the industrial safety record and certificates the refinery in operation the workers clinic executive offices and more.
Vancouver BC: Shell Oil of British Columbia On-The-Spot-Photographers Williams Brothers Feb. 1 1959. 4to. 44 pp unpaginated 12 pages on bonded paper w/ signatures 32 pages of two-sided mylar sleeves with white & black paper inserts for photographs with 76 original and studio photographs inserted into sleeves sized from 2.5 x 2.5 in. up to 8 x 10 in. nearly all originally glued with adhesive to backing papers but now just laid-in to mylar sleeves a few w/ photographer’s stamps on versos. Original tweed-patterned white vinyl padded 20-ring binder engraved silver plate mounted lower front corner minor soiling shelfwear thumbing to covers occasional creasing on some of the images glue offsetting on paper backing leaves behind the photos still a VG exemplar. This remarkable souvenir photo album documents the safety efforts and operations of the Shell Oil Shellburn Oil Refinery located on Burrard Inlet in British Columbia. Shell’s original refinery was constructed in 1932 but by the end of World War II the Canadian economy’s demands for oil products resulted in a substantial expansion which added thermal cracking distillation stabilization U.O.P. catalytic polymerization of stabilizer overhead gas gasoline refining and gasoline sweetening units. The refinery applied a number of new refining techniques perfected during the war to produce high-grade gasoline from high-pour waxy straight-run residue. Gardiner worked not only as public relations and safety inspector for the refinery but also as petroleum engineer. The album begins with large photo by W.T. Davis & F.B. Hughes of On-the-Spot Photographers with Gardiner showing three young girls the details on an oil refinery model which had been developed by Shell and Standard Oil of California in order to promote interest in the petroleum industry. This is then followed by birds-eye images of the refinery operating on the Burrard Inlet in the 1950s earlier images before and after expansion after World War II executive offices oil workers in frigid temperatures with icicles hanging off the equipment in the background large Shell Oil safety sign recording how many days since last industrial accident in the refinery in 1954 as well as awards ceremonies and banquets. Of interest is a particularly nice image towards the end of a Shell Oil Executive fronted with large Shell advertising sign and behind large architectural rendering of 1950s Shell service station with signage and Shell Oil tanker pulling into the station. A few of the photographs were by Donn and Warner Williams the Williams Brothers who served as aerial photographers in the R.C.A.F. during World War II and then established their Williams Bros. Ltd. Commercial Photo lab in 1948 in Vancouver BC. On-the-Spot Photographers operated by W.T. Davis and F.B. Hughes from 1945-1955 maintained studios at 520 Sixth Ave. and later 2124 London St. in New Westminster British Columbia. Written two decades before the discovery of oil the Middle East the last and longest publication describes an almost unrecognizable oil production. "It will be noted that the United States and Mexico together produced over 87 per cent. of the world's output in 1921
" p. 13. Under the header "Arabia" follows one of the shortest descriptions only stating that "Indications of oil are known on the Farsan Islands in the Red Sea where drilling has been unsuccessful. On the Persian Gulf coast of Arabia indications of oil occur in the neighbourhood of Basra and near Koweit. A deposit of asphalt

<p>This delightful pictorial map focusing on the North Pacific Ocean was distributed as a premium in connection with the syndicated radio program "Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen." The program featuring Jimmie Allen as an adventurous 16-year old pilot ran from 1933 to 1937 and from 1946 to 1947 and was sponsored initially by the Skelly Oil Company.</p><p>Background on the show appears on the Radio Days Theater of the Mind Museum website http://radiodaysmuseum.org<strong>:</strong></p><p><strong>"Broadcast History:</strong> 1933 to 1937 and 1946 to 1947.</p><p>The writers of Jimmie Allen had been flying aces in World War I. They came up with the idea of a show about a boy pilot while at a party in Kansas City and used their experience as pilots to create and write the show.</p><p>The show was one of the first to capitalize on the idea of a club as a promotional tool. To join the Jimmie Allen Flying Club all a child had to do was apply at any Skelly Gas Station the initial sponsor. As a member the child received a whole host of goodies ranging from a set of wings through to a "personal" letter from Jimmie himself. An incredible 600000 club newspapers were sent out to children each week and many thousands attended the Jimmie Allen Air Races that were held in Midwest cities.</p><p>The show was first broadcast between 1933 and 1937 and then came back to the air with brand new stories after the war between 1946 and 1947. Remarkable complete set of 14 postcards published by the Iraqi Ministry of Oil to celebrate the flourishing petroleum industry and probably its nationalisation in 1972. The first 2 postcards show the building of the ministry and the official state portraits of then President of Iraq Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr 1914-1982 and Vice Chairman Saddam Hussein 1937-2003. The remaining 12 postcards are each printed for a different month of the year and show various aspects of the Iraqi petroleum industry including the Al-Bakr deep water terminal renamed in 2003 to Al-Basah oil terminal the Al-Khalida oil products tanker the degassing station at North Rumaila oil field the eternal fire near Kirkuk which was the first oil field found in Iraq and the Haditha-Rumaila pipeline which was newly built at the time.With a small crack in one of the sides of the sturdy plastic case. "Gives the exact dose of leading medicines. Furnishes reliable prescriptions and treatment for numerous diseases of man and beast and many caluable recipes for a great variety of useful articles". Includes advertisements for the Fire Proof Farm Engine with the Shapley Sparkless Boiler sold at Shapley & Wells Binghamton and Practical Poultry Keeping by C. M. T. Johnson Binghamton. An interesting woodcut depicting an oil field and the Petrolina shack graces the front wrapper panel and in a larger form the rear panel. A crease from folding runs vertically through the booklet. <p>Rectangular 8vo 9½x5¼" pamphlet 1 11 leaves printed on rectos only original brown paper wrappers red ribbon tie at top. A little normal aging but otherwise near fine. This is an early Standard Oil piece that appears to be designed to promote the stock which according to this brochure consisted of only 2500000 shares. At the time of publication the par value was only $1 per share. The brochure discusses various oil field potential and on the inside back cover is a "no wild cat" illustration hyping the stock. This was printed well before the 1911 breakup of the company for violating the "Sherman Antitrust Act." A wonderful piece of corporate memorabilia. OCLC locates only a single copy at the University of Wyoming.</p>

Chicago: Lou Fox 1938. 1938. Approximately 8" x 6" bright colorful boards in the shape of a revolver and showing an illustration of an elf-like creature snapping his fingers and with the name "Snappy" on his hat. Printed in Red and blue. In order to use this toy gun the child would hold the grip of the revolver place his finger in trigger hole and swing downward quickly. A paper flap would come out of the muzzle of the gun making a loud pop. On this particular paper popper the paper flap shows "Starts Just Like That!" A rare and detailed Texas oil map produced by a Fort Worth firm just after World War I and here present in the larger 25-x-25-inch issue advertised in the promotional text on the map itself. The map shows the distribution of oil wells and derricks across the Lone Star State in 1920 prints the names of the most prominent oil fields and lists the names of Texas counties along with the oil companies active in each county. The map also shows the types of soil and rock deposits encountered throughout Texas counties with a legend of abbreviations for each at bottom right. The area of the map is crowded in places but still quite attractive and legible and is a good encapsulation of the rapidly developing oil industry in Texas at the time. Contemporary advertisements for the publisher of this map Standard Blue Print Map and Engineering promote the availability of over 200 oil maps of Texas Oklahoma New Mexico Louisiana and Arkansas from the firm. A rare map rarer still in this larger size; we locate just two copies at SMU one issued with a slightly later "May 1920" copyright notice with a larger "photocopy" reported at Denver Public Library and the Colorado School of Mines. Heydrick's Ownership Map of Knox Co. Texas
Wichita Falls Tx: Heydrick Mapping Company 1976. About very good. Blue line map 45.5 x 42 inches. On paper. Folded. Toning across top and bottom portions light edge wear. A late but nonetheless instructive oil map of Knox County Texas printed by the Heydrick Mapping Company which was known for its oil maps. Indeed their slogan on the map indicates "Oil men have used Heydrick maps since 1870." The legend shows various kinds of oil and gas wells -- producing dry drilled etc. Most of the oil activity is along the southern part of the county with a deep concentration of wells and oil companies noted across the D.G. Burnett lands. Dozens of oil companies are represented here many of which would be gone when the Texas oil boom busted in the early-1980s though production in Knox County was relatively steady through the lean times. Knox County is located between the DFW metroplex and Lubbock and oil was discovered there in 1945. <br /> <br /> "Oil was discovered in Knox County in 1945. By 1946 the county's first successful oil well had been spudded on the Beavers Ranch north of Benjamin; in subsequent years other wells were drilled in the southern part of the county. In 1948 oil production was only thirty-seven barrels but in 1956 it reached 978715 and in 1960 almost 2415000. County oil wells produced 2065000 barrels in 1965 771089 barrels in 1974 and 1421964 barrels in 1982. Production totaled about 888000 barrels in 1990 and by January 1 1991 almost 55881000 barrels had been taken from Knox County lands since discovery in 1945" - Handbook of Texas online. <br /> <br /> All Heydrick maps of Texas are scarce regardless of when they were produced with the vast majority being located in only one or two copies. Map of Reeves County Texas
Fort Worth: Logan Map Company 1930. Folded map 23 x 17.75 inches. Old folds minor wear a few closed tears along folds repaired with tape on verso bottom left marginal section a bit munched up. Good condition. A scarce and detailed plat map for Reeves County Texas in the crook of West Texas between Fort Stockton and New Mexico. This gridded county map provides numerous details on land ownership oil leases railroad lands and other claims; a number of the major oil companies including Humble Texas California Marland and Atlantic were active in the county at this time. A key is printed in the margin locating various types of oil and gas wells. The middle portion of the map is overprinted in large red letters "Elliot & Waldron Title Companies" who provided information to prospective land buyers in Reeves and several surrounding West Texas counties at this time. <br /> <br /> "In the early 1920s Pecos became the focus of Delaware Basin oil exploration and received substantial publicity though little oil and gas were found in paying quantities. By 1930 however oil excitement had brought a larger and more diversified population to the county" -- Handbook of Texas online.
