br. Se chiedete a un ingegnere informatico che cosa siano gli esperimenti e come vengano condotti nella sua disciplina, quasi certamente vi risponderà che si tratta di procedimenti per testare ipotesi. Molto probabilmente risponderà anche che i principi sperimentali, come per esempio la ripetibilità e la riproducibilità, sono essenziali per rendere l'ingegneria informatica una scienza a tutti gli effetti e avvicinarla agli standard di rigore delle scienze naturali. Questo libro indaga come nella realtà sono condotti gli esperimenti nelle discipline dell'artificiale, concentrandosi in particolare su alcuni ambiti dell'ingegneria informatica, come l'intelligenza artificiale e la robotica autonoma. Da un'analisi approfondita emerge che la pratica e gli obiettivi sperimentali di queste discipline sono assai diversi da quelli delle scienze naturali. Ecco perché occorre ampliare la visione tradizionale di esperimento, proponendo l'idea di esperimento esplorativo.
