Erste Ausgabe. - Philipp Spiller (1800-1879), deutscher Physiker, Mathematiker und Philosoph. 1826-1828 Mitglied des Seminars für Gelehrtenschulen in Breslau und Collaborator am Matthiasgymnasium, Gymnasiallehrer bis 1837, später Oberlehrer am Mariengymnasium zu Posen und zuletzt Lehrer an einer höheren Schule in Berlin. Spiller ist in der Geschichte der Physik besonders bekannt durch seine Bemühungen, "alle physikalischen Erscheinungen aus einem Princip zu erklären und das Phantom der Imponderabilien zu verscheuchen". Die Resultate seiner diesbezüglichen, bereits 1855 begonnenen und 1876 zum Abschluß gebrachten Untersuchungen sind niedergelegt in seinem "Die Urkraft des Weltalls" (Berlin 1876) betitelten Hauptwerk. - Aus dem Inhalt des vorliegenden Bandes: Die Sonne; Die Planeten; Die Monde; Die Kometen; Sternschnuppen und Meteorsteine; Asteroiden; Höhere Weltkörpersysteme; u.a. In 4° (cm 16,5 x 24), legatura piena pergamena coeva, incisione in rame al frontespizio raffigurante Giove assiso ad un tavolo, circondato da altri otto personaggi rivestiti di toghe o antiche armature ed elmi, i protagonisti dei cinque dialoghi che costituiscono l'opera. Sguardie rifatte in carta filigranata "Fabrica della margarita", pp (56), 242, (2), antiche annotazioni all'occhietto, sul verso dell'antiporta, alla terza carta. Uno strappetto restaurato, interno in buone condizioni, carta forte. Dedica al Cardinale di Richelieu. Tra gli argomenti dibattuti tra gli interlocutori: grande spazio è dedicato all'attendibilità dell'Astrologia, che "ci annuncia i comandi del Cielo e ci dispone a seguirli"; esistono però gli astrologi "rei", e l'A. fornisce la descrizione delle loro caratteristiche, che si avvicinano a quelle di Alchimisti, Maghi, Incantatori, affinchè il lettore possa diffidarne. Molte pagine sono dedicate alle sorprendenti proprietà dei Magneti. Poi, i Cieli e la visione cosmica dell'universo, suddiviso in infinite costellazioni, descritte con immagini di grande respiro ed echi danteschi; le Comete, le Stelle Erranti, le Polari, la Via Lattea, e i "lor cittadini, quando n'avessero", loro morfologia nonchè influenza sui destini terreni; le Eclissi e il loro meccanismo ed effetti; i Cannibali, un esempio della relatività di cosa sia considerato abominevole e cosa lecito, in zone disparate della Terra; gli organi del corpo umano, loro funzioni e meccanismo: il cuore, il sangue, il suo "giro" nel corpo umano, le vene, la cava e arteriosa; qua e là troviamo curiose ricette popolari: l'unghia o il corno, "nati delle superfluità del nudrimento degli animali", liberano e custodiscono dal mal caduco e dai veleni. (mm. 149x89), p. pergamena antica (risg. rifatti), titolo ms. al dorso, 4 cc.nn., pp. 69,(3), con 1 xilografia a piena pag. nel testo che raffigura il Sole, la Terra e la Luna in diverse posizioni, oltre a 2 tavv. f.t., più volte ripieg., che illustrano la Luna nelle sue fasi (piena, crescente e calante), pure inc. su legno. Testo in latino e greco. Dissertazione scientifica (tenutasi nell’Accademia di Uppsala il 30 ottobre 1686), suddivisa in 5 brevi capitoli: “De Luna Onomatologia - De Materia Lunae - De Maculis Lunae - De Lumine Lunae - De Influxu Lunae”. Ne fu relatore lo svedese Andrea Spole (Spolius) (1630-1699), professore di matematica alle Università di Lund e Uppsala. "Rarissima e unica edizione". L’Autore di questa “disputatio” è il matematico svedese Samuel A. Krook (1661-1716); fu nominato professore di matematica a Pernau nel 1701 ma non riuscì a ricoprìre questa posizione. Pubblicò almanacchi tra il 1691 e il 1716 con saggi da lui scritti di carattere astronomico, storico e cronologico e partecipò ai preparativi per la riforma del calendario svedese. Cfr. Liden “Catalogus disputationum” (Upsaliae,1778), p. 434, che cita la ns. edizione - Cfr. anche Cantamessa,III, 7630 e Poggendorff,II, p. 975 per Spole.
