Simson had a years-long trial for heresy. "Throughout the last century Simson's name was a byword as a disseminator of unsound doctrine; but he seems to have been perfectly sincere in expressing his loyalty to the standards of his church; he retracted expressions interpreted by others in an heretical sense and was never convicted of heresy. He had adopted the maxim that reason is �fundamentum theologi� and his aim was to make orthodoxy intelligible - DNB." This is Rev. McClaren's defense of the orthodoxy of the Church of Scotland. "But I am sorry Simson should have employed his Parts to teach and defend such dangerous Errors as tend to worm out the Vitals of our received Doctrine and as it were to bring in another Gospel - Preface." Simson was sanctioned because "he held it probable that the moon was inhabited. " McClaren's last chapter addresses the issue as to whether or not there might be Rational Men living on the moon.
