Bound in blind stamped violet publisher's cloth with the gilt image of a comet on the spine; head and tail caps neatly restored; spine is faded. Corner tips of boards repaired; inner hinges carefully strengthened. Interior pages are generally clean and fresh; some chipping to top edge of title page due to opening; light scattered foxing to several of the meridional table pages. Capt. William Henry Smyth 1788-1865 British Admiral and astronomer. He built an observatory Hartwell in Bedford where he carried on his astronomical investigations for many years. In 1844 he published his "Cycle of celestial objects for use of naval military and private astronomers" sometimes referred to as the Bedford catalogue a work for which he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society see DNB. The present volume according to the Memoires of the R.A.S. is "a supplement to the 'Bedford Catalogue' containing the results of observations made at Hartwell between the years 1839 and 1859 bringing up to the latter date the history of many of the more remarkable double stars. Certo, sono tempi pericolosi per opporsi alle teorie dominanti: Copernico si censura, si confida solo con una manciata di colleghi, evita il proselitismo, teme il ridicolo o peggio. I grandi stravolgimenti a cui assiste - la Riforma protestante, la rivolta dei contadini, la guerra tra Cavalieri teutonici e Turchi ottomani - lo turbano, così come il rischio che le conseguenze del suo lavoro di scienziato si ripercuotano sulla sua vita rispettabile di uomo di Chiesa. Poi, il giovane matematico Retico travolge come un ciclone la sua quieta esistenza e lo convince a dare alle stampe - nel 1543, l'anno della sua morte - il "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium". È però solo più di mezzo secolo dopo, quando il telescopio di Galileo sconvolgerà ulteriormente l'equilibrio dei cieli, che i timori di Copernico si avvereranno. Nel 1616 una commissione di undici teologi voterà sul sistema copernicano: giudicheranno che un Sole in quiete al centro del mondo è formalmente eretico perché in contrasto con le Sacre Scritture, e stabiliranno che l'universo eliocentrico è un'assurdità.

ill., ril. Dalla fine del XIX secolo, l'Osservatorio astronomico di Harvard iniziò ad assumere alcune donne come "calcolatori umani". L'"harem" - così veniva talvolta deriso il personale femminile - era formato da signore di tutte le età: esperte di matematica, astronome dilettanti, mogli, sorelle e figlie dei professori; alcune laureate, altre semplicemente appassionate. Attraverso l'"universo di vetro" che avevano a disposizione, formato da circa mezzo milione di lastre fotografiche su cui erano impresse le immagini delle stelle, queste studiose fecero alcune scoperte straordinarie: svilupparono un sistema di classificazione che fu accettato a livello internazionale ed è ancora in uso; intuirono la verità sulla composizione chimica dei cieli, e definirono una scala per misurare le distanze nello spazio. Alla loro storia Dava Sobel dedica il suo libro più appassionato, arricchito dai testi inediti di diari e lettere: "Quando hanno letto i nomi dei membri" scrive Annie Jump Cannon, una delle protagoniste, "mi sono assai meravigliata di scoprire che ero stata inserita nella Commissione per la classificazione degli spettri stellari, e una delle esperienze inattese è stata la riunione con i suoi membri. Sedevano a un lungo tavolo, quegli uomini provenienti da varie nazioni, e io ero l'unica donna". Era stata lei a studiare per anni gli spettri stellari, e fu lei a parlare per tutto il tempo.
