Amsterdam, Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1651, 4° (19,5 x 13) rilegato in mezza pelle non recente con tassello e titoli in oro al dorso, tagli rossi, marca tipografica xilografica al frontespizio, pp. (14)-316-(4) con numerose figure xilografiche nel testo, e una tavola ripiegata fuori testo. Gilbert (1544-1603) fu uno dei più celebri medici del suo tempo, oltre che fisico e filosofo naturale. Lavorò molto al Royal College, dove ebbe importanti incarichi durante tutta la sua carriera. E' ricordato soprattutto per il suo celeberrimo De Magnete (1600) [Printing and the Mind of Man, 107], di cui quest'opera postuma costituisce per certi versi la continuazione. E' composta da due parti largamente indipendenti e incompiute, raccolte dal fratello dello studioso: la Physiologia (iniziata dopo il 1590, l'A. ci lavorò fino alla morte) e la Meteorologia (iniziata attorno al 1580 e mai terminata). Le acquisizioni del De Magnete vengono in queste opere approfondite e sistematizzate in una dissertazione volta a demolire la cosmologia aristotelica, e in particolare la teoria dei quattro elementi. Per ottenere il suo obiettivo l'A. esamina non pochi fenomeni naturali, dal calore alla luce, dalla luna alle comete e alla via lattea, dal vento alle fonti e ai mari, costruendo una cosmologia di grande interesse storico e documentario. Leggermente corto di margini, lievi fioriture alle prime e ultime carte, restauro professionale alla carta ripiegata. Peraltro esemplare molto ben conservato. Edizione originale. ill., br. Il saggio pubblicato da Gingerich nel 2009 [...] conteneva una dimostrazione folgorante che i cinque disegni delle lune contenuti nella «New York copy» erano necessariamente falsi. Non potevano che essere falsi, sulla base di un confronto calibrato e sistematico fra due tempistiche storiche: la tempistica delle osservazioni astronomiche compiute da Galileo, all'«occhiale di canna», a partire dall'autunno del 1609, e la tempistica della lavorazione delle bozze del "Sidereus Nuncius", quali Galileo aveva approntate, con il tipografo veneziano Tommaso Baglioni, nelle ultime settimane dell'inverno 1610, il più febbrile e il più esaltante della sua vita. In "The curious case", Owen Gingerich lo scienziato muoveva da una ricostruzione notte per notte, ora per ora, quasi minuto per minuto, delle osservazioni telescopiche di Galileo, con luna crescente o con luna calante, con cielo sereno o con cielo nuvoloso, a crateri visibili o a crateri invisibili, per ragionare del modo in cui Galileo stesso poteva o non poteva avere disegnato le fasi lunari da lui inquadrate con il cannocchiale.
