ill. Il presente lavoro si snoda tra le questioni più scottanti offerte dall'attuale scienza astronomica, con particolare attenzione all'alleanza che anticamente vigeva tra scienza e filosofia. A causa della necessità di dividere in settori sempre più specifici la scienza, quest'alleanza è andata progressivamente perduta. Il libro prende le mosse da una breve ricostruzione degli eventi che hanno portato all'attuale stato di cose, soffermandosi sulle prime osservazioni del cielo che hanno fatto le civiltà antiche: dai metodi diversi (e tuttavia incredibilmente rassomiglianti) che ciascuna ha adottato, al radicarsi di una tendenza particolare, frutto della tradizione o dell'incontro e dello scambio culturale tra i popoli. L'opera è suddivisa in quattro parti, ciascuna relativa a uno dei numerosi interrogativi che riguardano la natura dello spaziotempo. Nell'ultima parte dell'opera lo sguardo si volge al futuro, ragionando sulla possibilità o meno dei viaggi nel tempo, ovvero sulle teorie e i metodi che potrebbero renderli possibili. In un'ottica che abbraccia la scienza, la filosofia e la letteratura, il proposito è quello di indurre il lettore a un'attenta riflessione sui misteri che avvolgono la conoscenza del cosmo e sul duro lavoro fatto dagli uomini del passato per arrivare al punto in cui ci troviamo oggi, con tutte le difficoltà che hanno incontrato. Infine, si cerca di aprire nuovi possibili scenari, stagliati su un futuro ancora nebuloso, che attende solo di essere costruito e svelato.
