Arthur C. Clarke author of the greatest stories ever written of our destiny in outer space - '2001: A Space Odyssey' see rja27647 in my 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die catalogue and '2012: Odyssey Two' - presents here an immensely readable and stimulating collection of essays examining the enormous possibilities the human race now has for both creativity and destruction. Against Orwell's ominous date 1984 he has deliberately set the hopeful word 'Spring' because he feels that the worst of the world's long winter may well be over. Arthur C. Clarke's passionate interest in space explorationhis vast knowledge of current technological and scientific developments then 1984 and his informed optimistic humanismare communicated in an immediately accessible style which will strike a responsive chord in the hearts and minds of all readers concerned for the future of humankind on - and off - Earth. D.W. (DENNIS WILLIAM) SCIAMA
To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of yom hand, And Eternity in an Hour. Davis, Harriet Riddle (Inscribed To Reviewer Annie W Sanborn)
In Sight Of The Goddess A Tale Of Washington Life
Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott 1896. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine. Plates And Decorations. 227 Pp. Yellow Cloth Stamped In Green. Ownership Signature Of St. Paul Mn Literary Editor Annie W. Sanborn. Near Fine Lightly Used Bright And Clean Pages Square And Fresh Just Some Tiny Light Stains Rear Cover. Willa Cather Reviewed The Book In 1897 Writing As "Helen Delay": "Among The More Recent Books There Is A Little Volume Published By Lippincott Called "In Sight Of The Goddess." It Is A Story Of Political Life In Washington And Is Of Considerable Interest Just Now When A New Presidential Regime Has Just Begun And Washington Is The Center Of Interest. Washington Is Very Unlike Other Cities And Has An Atmosphere Of It's Own And Conditions Peculiar To Itself. If You Didn't Go Down To The Inauguration You Had Better Read "In Sight Of The Goddess" And See The City Through Miss Harriet Riddle Davis' Glasses. Very Fair And Unprejudiced Glasses They Are Too. The Story Is That Of A Young Washingtonian Who Acts As Secretary To One Of The Cabinet Officers And Loves That Gentleman's Daughter. The Story Is Bright And Clever In Itself But The Side Touches The Description Of Washington Life And Manners Are The Most Interesting Features Of The Book. Society Has Come To Play A Very Important Part In Politics Rather Too Important Perhaps But It Is Interesting To See "How The Wheels Go Round" In The Inner Circles Of Official Life And To Study Public Men As They Are In Private. It Is Said That All The Characters Of Miss Davis' Book Were Drawn From Well-Known Originals And That Its Appearance Caused No Little Stir In Washington." Harriet Riddle Dabvis Was Daughter Of A Prominent Ohio Congressman Who Had Been An Associate Of Abraham Lincoln.

J. B. Lippincott hardcover

L'universo
