‎Un volume fort in-4°, reliure cuir (pleine basane racinée de l’époque), XIII (”Préface” ), [3] (”Table des Chapitres”), 739 pages, [3] “Fautes à corriger”. L’ouvrage compte 67 planches dépliantes hors-texte (des figures d’optique et des instruments), au grand complet. Cet ouvrage, que son auteur, Robert SMITH (1689-1768) , un grand mathématicien anglais, publia initialement en Angleterre (en 1738) fut considéré pendant longtemps comme le meilleur dans son domaine. De plus, sa traduction en français par Nicolas-Claude DUVAL-LEROY, Professeur de Mathématiques à l’Ecole d’Artillerie de Brest fut jugée des plus remarquables par tous les spécialistes, d’autant plus qu’elle augmentait entre autre l’ouvrage initial de “Remarques nouvelles sur les Lunettes achromatiques” et d’une description de l’Héliostat (ce que DUVAL-LEROY explique et justifie très bien dans sa Préface). Le texte est divisé en trois parties ou Livres. Le Livre 1er est dit “contenant une exposition simple & facile de l’Optique”. Le Livre Second est dit “Dans lequel l’Optique est traitée avec l’étendue & l’exactitude convenables, à l’aide de la Géométrie et du Calcul”. Le Livre troisième est dit: “ De la manière de tailler les verres & les miroirs des télescopes; & description des instruments d’optique“. Notre exemplaire a été très solidement restauré et donne l’impression de ne jamais avoir été consulté tant ses pages de texte et ses planches sont immaculées. Tel qu’il est, il peut être considéré comme en TRES BON ETAT.‎

‎* Seltene, erste Ausgabe ! --- Die Stereoskopie (altgriechisch: stereos ?Raum/räumlich, fest? und skopeo ?betrachten?) ist die Wiedergabe von Bildern mit einem räumlichen Eindruck von Tiefe, der physikalisch nicht vorhanden ist. Umgangssprachlich wird Stereoskopie fälschlich als ?3D? bezeichnet, obwohl es sich nur um zweidimensionale Abbildungen (2D) handelt, die einen räumlichen Eindruck vermitteln (?Raumbild?). Normale zweidimensionale Bilder ohne Tiefeneindruck werden als monoskopisch (griech: monos ?eins? einfach) bezeichnet. Das Prinzip beruht immer darauf, dass Menschen, wie alle Primaten und die meisten Raubtiere, durch ihre zwei Augen ihre Umgebung gleichzeitig aus zwei Blickwinkeln betrachten. Dadurch kann ihr Gehirn zu allen betrachteten Objekten effizient eine Entfernung zuordnen und ein räumliches Bild seiner Umgebung gewinnen (?Räumliches Sehen?), ohne den Kopf in Bewegung halten zu müssen. Die Stereoskopie befasst sich folglich nur damit, in das linke und rechte Auge jeweils unterschiedliche zweidimensionale Bilder aus zwei leicht abweichenden Betrachtungswinkeln zu bringen. Dazu gibt es verschiedene Verfahren. Alle anderen Eigenschaften eines zweidimensionalen Bildes, wie perspektivische Verzerrung in Abhängigkeit von einer unnatürlichen Objektivbrennweite, die Farbe und insbesondere aber auch die beschränkende Standortbindung des Betrachters, bleiben erhalten. Gerade die beiden letzten Eigenschaften dieses Raumbildverfahrens bedingen den erheblichen Unterschied zur Holografie, die sich mit dem Versuch befasst, Objekte vollständig, also dreidimensional (in 3D), aufzuzeichnen und wiederzugeben.
