‎Garrison/Morton 5985. - Erste Veröffentlichung der wichtigen Arbeit des britisch-ungarischen Augenarztes J. Dallos (1905-1979) über die Einführung der Kontaktlinsen in der Augenheilkunde. - "Josef Dallos wurde 1905 in Budapest als Sohn eines Lehrers geboren. Bereits im Alter von 25 Jahren qualifizierte er sich 1928 als Arzt und arbeitete dort in der "Universitätsklinik Nr. 1", was heute die Semmelweis Universität ist für Augenheilkunde. Schon bald begann er mit der Anpassung von Kontaktlinsen, dabei verwendete er Original Zeiss-Kontaktlinsen, die damals einzig erhältlichen. Er schlug mittels einer neuartigen Abformtechnik einige Verbesserungen des Designs vor, die gemeinsam 1934 mit Zeiss patentiert wurden. Seine Experimente zur Abformtechnik waren revolutionär, da er unter Verwendung einer plastisch verformbaren Masse (Negocol) am lebenden Auge Abdrücke abnehmen konnte, die über die tatsächliche Form der Hornhaut und Sklera Auskunft gab. Negocol war ein aus Algen gewonnenes Material, das auf 41° bis 42° C erhitzt und auf das betäubte Auge gespritzt wurde. Es härtete beim Abkühlen aus, und Dallos wandelte die Form mit einem wachsartigen Präparat (Hominite) in einen Positivabguss um. Später verwendete er sogar einen Positivabguss aus Messing, formte darüber eine Glaslinse ab und nahm alle notwendigen Anpassungen durch Schleifen vor. Einige Historiker sind der Meinung, dass dies die ersten modernen Sklerallinsen waren, die individuell für die Augen des Patienten angefertigt wurden. In späteren Jahren wurde das Negocol durch eine Formmasse namens Moldite und die Messingform durch eine Positivgussmasse namens Castone ersetzt. Dies waren die Grundlagen, um passgenaue Kontaktlinsen herzustellen. 1933 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Artikel über Kontaktlinsen in einer deutschen Fachzeitschrift für Augenheilkunde, "Ueber Haftglaser und Kontaktschalen". Noch im selben Jahr erhielt er ein ungarisches Patent für die Herstellung von Kontaktlinsen, die unter den Augenlidern stabilisiert werden konnten, ohne die Hornhaut zu berühren, und erlangte die Zulassung als Facharzt für Augenheilkunde. Josef Dallos kam nach Großbritannien, um der Bedrohung durch die Nazis in seinem Heimatland Ungarn zu entgehen. Im Mai 1937 zog er mit seinem Schwager George Nissel nach England. Dallos arbeitete in der Wigmore Street 9, bevor er das erste reine Kontaktlinsenzentrum am Cavendish Square 18 gründete. Zwischen 1938 und 1948 passte er Linsen in Moorfields an und besuchte das St. Mary?s und das Western Ophthalmic Hospital. Während des Krieges versorgte er Soldaten, damit sie in den aktiven Dienst zurückkehren konnten. Er passte auch bei vielen ehemaligen Soldaten Glassklerallinsen an, die nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg an Senfgas-Keratitis erkrankt waren, arbeitete intensiv an der Sauerstoffversorgung der Hornhaut, entwickelte Abdrücke der Hornhaut zur Herstellung von Hornhautlinsen aus Glas und entwickelte eine Methode zur Desinfektion von weichen Linsen. Er war der Erste, der bei der Anpassung von Kontaktlinsen die Physiologie des Auges berücksichtigte. ‎Les vues doptiques sont un type particulier destampes populaires publiées en Europe au XVIIIe siècle. Ces estampes étaient une forme de divertissement destinée à être vue à travers des appareils appelés « machines optiques », « optiques », « zograscopes ». Ces estampes étaient exposées par des forains ambulants dans les rues de toute lEurope et étaient également collectionnées par les professionnels et les classes supérieures qui possédaient des machines optiques chez eux. Il y avait une grande curiosité pour lapparence des villes européennes non visitées et des lieux exotiques aux confins du globe, et ces estampes étaient lun des seuls moyens pour le grand public davoir un aperçu du monde. Les machines optiques utilisées pour ces gravures étaient équipées d'une lentille qui améliorait pour les spectateurs le grossissement et la perception de la profondeur tridimensionnelle des scènes représentées. Un miroir était souvent utilisé pour que les gravures en perspective puissent être vues à plat, et dans ces cas, les images étaient vues à l'envers. Il n'est donc pas rare que les scènes représentées soient dessinées à l'envers, et il y a souvent aussi un titre imprimé à l'envers en haut, permettant aux spectateurs de le lire rapidement. Il y avait généralement un texte supplémentaire au bas des gravures, souvent en plusieurs langues, qui pouvait être lu par l'opérateur de l'optique au bénéfice de son public ......... rare gravure ........... en bon état (good condition). en bon état‎

Prima edizione di questa rara e importante opera nella storia dell'ottica e del telescopio; ha avuto una grande influenza sulle teorie ottiche di Newton ed è di grande interesse galileiano. De radiis visus et lucis si occupa di lenti, telescopi e arcobaleno. De Dominis sapeva come la luce si rifrangeva nel suo passaggio da un mezzo all'altro. Dopo l'invenzione del telescopio De Dominis ha aggiunto la sua spiegazione teorica al suo lavoro. La sua spiegazione non fu del tutto soddisfacente, tuttavia, perché la sua conoscenza della legge di rifrazione era incompleta. De Dominis descrive in modo particolareggiato l'effetto sull'angolo di vista di una lente di maggiore curvatura o di maggiore distanza tra la lente e l'oggetto che si sta osservando. De radiis visus et lucis deals with lenses, telescopes, and the rainbow. De Dominis knew how light was refracted in its passage from one medium to another. After the invention of the telescope Dominis added its theoretical explanation to his work. His explanation was not entirely satisfactory, however, because his knowledge of the law of refraction was incomplete. De Dominis describes in particular detail the effect on the angle of sight of a lens of greater curvature or of a greater distance between the lens and the object being viewed. With the same thoroughness he examined lens combinations, in particular the combination of a convex object glass and a concave eyepiece. This work led to his discovery of the conditions under which the magnification of an image is possible.""–D.S.B., IV, p. 158.In the Preface, Giovanni Bartoli, who was Tuscan Ambassador at Venice and an early advocate of Galileo’s discoveries, describes the newly invented telescope (attributing its invention to Galileo) and the discoveries made possible by this instrument. De Dominis also provides an account of the telescope (pp. 34-43) and even suggests draw-tubes, which came into use much later. This book also contains De Dominis’ famous theory of the rainbow which greatly influenced Newton. In 1704, Newton wrote in his Optics: ""This Refraction was of late more fully discover’d and explain’d by the famous Antonius de Dominis, Archbishop of Spalato, in his book De Radiis Visus et Lucis, published by his friend Bartolus at Venice, in the Year 1611, and written above 20 Years before. For he teaches there how the interior Bow is made in round Drops of Rain by two Refractions of the Sun light."". For a thorough discussion of De Dominis explanation of the rainbow, see Boyer, The Rainbow (pp. 187-92 & passim), who calls it ""superior to any other published in the interval of three centuries from 1311 to 1611."" Newton owned a copy of the present book which is now at the Trinity College, Cambridge (see Harrison, The Library of Isaac Newton, 535). De Dominis (1560-1626), a Dalmatian Jesuit, lectured on mathematics, logic, and philosophy at Verona, Padua, and Brescia. He was later appointed archbishop of Split (Spalato). His belief in the unity of all Christian churches and peace among nations caused him to flee to England. Soon after his return to Rome, he was imprisoned by the Inquisition. ‎Georg Friedrich von Reichenbach (* 24. August 1771 in Durlach; † 21. Mai 1826 in München) war ein bayerischer Erfinder und Ingenieur. Als Sohn eines Schlossers durchlebte Reichenbach seine Lehrjahre in Mannheim und durfte mit kurfürstlicher Förderung nach England reisen. Nach seiner Rückkehr konstruierte er Maschinen für eine Gewehrfabrik. 1802 baute er in München eine Kreisteilmaschine und entwickelte 1809 zusammen mit Joseph von Fraunhofer optische Geräte. Mit Joseph Liebherr (1767–1840) und Joseph von Utzschneider gründete er das Mathematisch-Feinmechanische Institut. Reichenbach gilt als Wegbereiter der Dampfmaschine in Bayern. 1810 wurde unter der Leitung von Reichenbach die Soleleitung von Bad Reichenhall nach Traunstein bis nach Rosenheim verlängert. Sie war bis 1958 in Betrieb und ist in Teilen heute noch (inaktiv) vorhanden. 1817 baute er eine 25 km lange Soleleitung von Berchtesgaden nach Bad Reichenhall. Um die 356 m Steigung zu überwinden, setzte er eine 1810 von ihm entwickelte Wassersäulenmaschine ein, um das Wasser für die Soleleitungen zu heben. Dafür wurde er vom Bayerischen König Max I. Joseph in den Adelsstand erhoben. Nach dem gleichen Prinzip entwickelte er auch Maschinen, die Wasser in Wassertürme förderten, von denen das Trinkwasser anfangs durch Holzleitungen, später durch Eisenrohre im Versorgungsgebiet verteilt wurde.‎

Editorial sturdy green cloth with bright gilt lettering on front board and spine, spine slightly faded and light foxing on pastedowns and endpapers otherwise a very good, nice copy, crisp and clean. Important work by the Italian scientist Galileo Ferraris, originally published in Italian as The Fundamental Properties of Dioptric Instruments, here translated into English by Oscar Faber. From the review which apperared in Nature, the scientific journal: "The original of this translation was published by Prof. Galileo Ferraris, of Turin, in 1876. As a copy of this original could apparently not be procured, the English translation was made from a German one by Lippich, which appeared in 1879. At the time of its appearance the book unquestionably marked a great advance in the treatment of its subject, and well deserved the extremely favourable review with which Abbe honoured the German translation in the first volume of the Zeitschrift für Instrumentenkunde."‎
