‎First printing of this important paper which coined the term ""cumulant"" within probability theory and statistics.Cumulants were first introduced by the Danish mathematician and statistician Thorvald N. Thiele in 1889. He, however, called them ""half-invariants"", a name that was not to be used for them in the future. It was not until the present work by the great statistical geneticist Ronald Fisher and the famous statistician John Wishart (eponym of the Wishart distribution) that these ""cumulants"" were given their name, the name that we still use today. According to the historian Stephen Stigler, the name ""cumulant"" was suggested to Fisher by Harold Hotelling. In another paper published in 1929, Fisher had called them cumulative moment functions.The present volume contains many other interesting and important mathematical papers, e.g. Carmichael's ""Expansions of Arithmetical Functions in Infinite Series"" (vol. 34), Mulholland's ""The Generalization of Certain Inequality Theorems Involving Powers."" (vol. 33), etc., etc.‎

‎First appearance of Fredholm's doctoral thesis (finish in 1898 but not published till 1900) and his first major work in partial differential equations. His doctoral dissertation involved a study of partial differential equations, the study of which was motivated by an equilibrium problem in elasticity. He solved his operator equation in the particular cases which arise in the study of the physical problem in his thesis (and in the paper which appeared in 1900 based on that thesis)""Fredholm's first major work was in partial differential equations. His doctoral thesis, written in 1898 and published in 1900, involved the study of the equation-written in Fredholm's own operator notation. [...] This equation is significant because it occurs in the study of deformation of anisotropic media (such as crystals) subjected to interior or exterior forces. ‎This set comprises the entire ""Logische Untersuchungen"" in the first English language translations. In the foreword to ""Compound Thoughts"", the translator notes: ""This article, entitled ""Logische Untersuchungen. Dritter Teil: Gedankenfüge"", was published in the ""Beiträge zur Philosophie des deutschen Idealismus, III (1923), 36-51. The first two parts of these ""logical investigations"" were ""Der Gedanke"" (Beiträge I (1819), trans. ""The Thought"" in MIND LXV (1956) ) and ""Die Verneinung"" (Beiträge I (1919), trans. ""Negation"" in Geach and Black (ed.) ""Translations from the Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege.""). The three articles that constitute the Logical Investigations are some of the most important, influential and widely discussed of Frege's philosophical papers. In 1875 the entire ""Logical Investigations"" appeared together in English translation for the first time. It was Frege's wish that these three articles were viewed as a whole and published together under the title of ""Logische Untersuchungen"", now considered a work of the utmost importance. These three volumes also comprise many other articles by Frege in the first English translations (in Translations from the Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege) as well as original contributions by P.T. Geach: ""On Frege's Way Out"" (in Mind Vol. LXV, No. 259. and ""Mr. Strawson on Symbolic and Traditional Logic"" (in Mind Vol. LXXII, No. 285).Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege (1848 - 1925) was a German mathematician, but his main contributions lie in his becoming a logician and a philosopher, who influenced the fields of logic and analytic philosophy immensely. Together with Wittgenstein, Russel and Moore, Frege is considered the founder of analytic philosophy, and a main founder of modern mathematical logic. His influence on 20th century philosophy has been profound, especially in the English speaking countries from the middle of the 20th century and onwards" in this period most of his works were translated into English for the first time.The philosophical papers of Frege were published in Germany in scholarly journals, which were barely read outside of German speaking countries. The first collections of his writings did not appear untill after the the Second World War, and Frege was little known as a philosopher during his lifetime. He greatly influenced the likes of Russel, Wittgenstein and Carnap, though, and bears a great responsibility for the turn modern philosophical thought has taken. Due to his contributions to the philosophy of language, analytic philosophy could be founded as it were.‎

His mathematical abilities, which manifested themselves quite early, attracted the attention of a number of prominent scholars, including Daniel Bernoulli, who in 1772 recommended him to Euler, then living in Russia, as a secretary. ‎First edition of this epochmaking work in mathematical statistics and mathematical and computational astronomy. Here, Gauss revealed for the first time his method of least squares which became “the dominant theme – the leitmotif – of nineteenth-century mathematical statistics” (Stigler, p. 11). Together with his ‘Disquisitiones Arithmeticae’ this work “established his reputation as a mathematical and scientific genius of the first order.” (DSB) Here he presented “an analysis of the problems arising in the determination of the motions of the planets and comets from a limited number of observational data"" (PMM 257 note). ""In this work Gauss systematically developed the method of orbit calculation from three observations he had devised in 1801 to locate the planetoid Ceres, the earliest discovered of the 'asteroids,' which had been spotted and lost by G. Piazzi in January 1801."" (Norman 879). On January 1, 1801, the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi discovered the planetoid Ceres, but could only observe it for few days before it was lost in the glare of the Sun until the end of the year. After so many months of not being observed it was not possible to calculate with existing methods at which position it should reappear. Gauss, however, at an age of 24, astounded the world, when in December of that same year he predicted the exact location at which Ceres could again be observed. He did not reveal how he had calculated the orbit of Ceres. Only in 1809, when Gauss published his second book ""Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectionibus conicis solem ambientium"" (the offered item), did he reveal his new method of orbit calculation. In the first part he dealt with differential equations, conic sections and elliptic orbits, while in the second part, the main part of the work, he showed how to estimate and then to refine the estimation of a planet's orbit using a new method involving minimizing the sum of squared residuals, i.e. the method of least squares. He was able to prove the correctness of the method under the assumption of normally distributed errors. ‎Extremely scarce first edition of this comprehensive mathematical work, which was important in the spreading of the understanding of mathematical concepts. Johnn Rudolph von Graffenried, an encestor of Niklaus von Graffenried, was born in 1584. His great passion was the understanding of mathematical concepts, and in 1618-19 he published his main work ""Arithmeticae Logisticae"", in which he deals with the mathematical theories and theorems of Cardanus, Christoph Rudolf, Glarean, Schoner, Stiffel, Ramus, etc. The first part of the work deals with calculating with cardinal and broken numbers, the second with proportion, progression, etc., the third with calculation of interest, society, demography etc., and the fourth with decimal fractions.The general state of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics in Switzerland in the early 17th century was in a bad state, and Graffenried came to play a dominant role in the spreading and teaching of arithmetic in Switzerland, mainly through the present work.‎

‎Scarce offprint issue of Grothendieck's seminal paper in which he founded crystalline cohomology. He introduced crystalline cohomology to study the p-torsion part of the cohomology of characteristic p varieties. In the crystalline topology which is the basis of this theory, covering maps are given by infinitesimal thickenings together with divided power structures. The crystalline covers of a fixed scheme form a category with no final object.‎
