FRENCH MATHEMATICAL MANUSCRIPTS: Cours de Mathematiques. THREE VOLUME SET
Paris ca 1795. Hardcover. Near Fine. An exceptional French Mathematics Manuscript in 3 volumes. Contemporary French mottled calf gilt floral panels separate black morocco labeling covers with border line tooling marbling on text block edging. Collation: Géometrie &2- 193 pp. 60 blank leaves; Algèbra & 2 -166 pp. 46 blank leaves; Planches & 2pp. 182 figures on 76 plates 48 blank leaves. All plates are on stiff blue laid paper. This course was taken by noted French economist Arthémond de Régny 1777-1841 probably during his university training in the latter part of the 18 century. Each volume has been prepared well with very legible and precise script and geometric figures. The organization of the Geometry volume starts with Euclid with numerical reference to geometric drawings in the Plate volume. A number of Problems Solutions and Corollaries are next. The remainder of this volume deals with 50 theorems for plane and sold geometry. Each theorem is stated first followed by demonstration then corollaries with further demonstration construction remark and ends with one or more problems along with solutions and reference where appropriate to figures in Plate volume. The volume on Algebra starts with basic addition subtraction multiplication and division. Next is a discussion of algebraic fractions their reduction with same denominator multiplication division and equations. Numerous examples of equations and computations occupy the remainder of the manuscript. Included are problems for solving equations with one two or three unknowns occasionally presenting a solution with a second method. The end of the manuscript has problems for 2 unknowns of znd degree division of irrationals and extracting the square root of a binomial. <br/><br/>Provenance: Arthémond de Régny bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Régny was a noted French economist who was invited around 1830 by Greek leader Capodistrias to assist Greece with their economic problems. Although Capodistrias was assassinated before he arrived Régny stayed in Greece during the period of Regency 1833-1835. He went on to found and assist in organizing the State Audit Council according to French ideals and became its first chairman. He also assisted in the Foundation of the National Bank of Greece in 1841. Arthémond de Régny got married in 1798 to the Genoese woman Catherine Castellini who was the daughter of Balthasar and granddaughter of Domenico Castellini who conquered the Algerians in 1763. Balthasar Castellini was consul to Naples and subsequently in Cartagena Spain Marseille and Genoa. He was in charge of important missions by the royal court of Naples and also held an outstanding position in the trade. The family Régny was originally from the province of Dombes. Italy ca. late 17th or early 18th c. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to 24 x 17 cm. Collation: 90 numbered pages and 2 duplicate page numbers 74 and 75 as and Addendum to the Arithmetic section. All pages are in manuscript with 3 in text tables 3 folding tables at end and 18 figures on four folding plates. The figures have red wash for shading with title page in red and black ink. The text is written in a fine legible hand divided into sections on Arithmetic and Geometry. Each section has an introduction history presentation object and divisions. These paragraphs are followed either by propositions Arithmetic section or Addenda on separate topics such as conics parabola etc. Geometric section. The Arithmetic section is longest with 74 p. plus 2 addenda pages. The detail information in the Geometry sections leads to practical problem solving for surveying. We find no record of publication or for the author of this manuscript. This appears to be an original work used in teaching students most likely at a Capuchin monastery in the 17th and early 18th centuries. A scarce and extremely attractive example of Capuchin teaching of two major branches of mathematics Arithmetic and Geometry. <br /> <br/><br/> hardcover

Third edition of this excellent 18th-century mathematics text divided into sections on basic mathematics geometry and determining volumes of spheres and other shapes. Designed for use by architects artists builders surveyors and farmers as well as mathematics students the text proved very popular during the 18th Century and contributed to his appointment as a Royal Mathematical School master in 1748 working with James Hodgson with one of his most notable pupils being Benjamin Raffles who prepared a 740 page manuscript on navigation cyphering. Robertson 1716-1776 is perhaps best remembered for his Elements of Navigation considered one of the finest English-language navigation education manuals of the 18th century and used extensively by the Royal Navy. L’Hospital had arranged to receive private tutoring from Bernoulli in the new calculus and even after unknowingly sending Bernoulli’s solution of de Beune’s problem to Huygens without giving him credit was able to arrange with Bernoulli to continue their arrangement for a stipend. The last chapter of this textbook contains what is now known as “L’Hospital’s rule†for finding the limiting value of a fraction whose numerator and denominator tend to zero actually the work of Bernoulli. There are five leaves missing from the 'Troisième Partie' F4 F5 G1 G4 and G5: pages 85-90 95-96 and 101-104. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards now lacking the leather corner-pieces revealing earlier full vellum boards underneath; covers a little worn; light tidemark to the bottom inner corner of the text block throughout; a little worming to the top blank margin of the first 25 leaves; insect damage to the bottom edge extending at most a few millimetres into the wide blank bottom margins; first title leaf dusty and a little soiled; the five missing leaves notwithstanding overall a very presentable copy. The second edition of Claude Mydorge's expanded edition and critique of this popular early work of recreational mathematics first published in 1624 and usually attributed to Jean Leurechon. Each of Leurechon's mathematical problems is reprinted here in roman type with Mydorge's explanatory notes and criticism following in italic. The third part albeit relatively insubstantial only 44 well-illustrated pages is devoted exclusively to fireworks and their construction which probably explains the few missing leaves. The subtitle is: 'Composée d'un receuil de plusieurs plaisantes & recreatives inventions de feux d'artifice plus la maniere de faire toutes sortes de fuzées tant simples que doubles avec leur composition le tout representé par figures sic' Comprising a collection of several pleasant and recreative inventions of fireworks plus the manner of making all sorts of rockets both single and double with their composition all represented in figures. This third part together with the second made its first appearance in a 1628 edition of 'Récréations Mathématiques' published by Charles Osmont at Rouen. Their authorship has not been established HEEFER Albrecht: 'Récréations Mathématiques 1624 A Study on its Authorship Sources and Influence' revised 7 October 2004. <p>The fourth part 'Nottes sic sur les Recreations .' is by D.H.P.E.M. Denis Henrion Professeur ès Mathématiques. <p>Claude Mydorge 1585-1647 French mathematician was a friend of René Descartes with whom he shared a strong interest in optics and the nature of vision. 'Mydorge's first major work was the "Examen du livre des Récréations mathématiques" published in 1630. As the title suggests it was a work on recreational mathematics and was effectively a critique of Laurechon's sic book on the theme 'Récréations mathématiques' by the French Jesuit Jean Leurechon writing under the pen name of van Etten first appeared in 1624. However it was through his work on conic sections that Mydorge made the greatest scientific impact' The Cambridge Descartes Lexicon online. <p>Provenance: a 1713 signature on the first page; an early ownership inscription 'Michael Hutchins His Book' on a preliminary page; 'G.S. Single volume decorated manuscript on paper in Arabic 180 leaves 172 x 100 mm; single column mostly 17 lines per page informal naskh freehand sometimes verging on shekasteh script important sections and headings in red numerous tables grids and diagrams throughout the text some contemporary annotations to margins catch-words outer margins of first leaf replaced overall clean and crisp internal condition late eighteenth-century leather-backed marbled boards edges a little rubbed.<br /> An interesting treatise on mathematics with a particular focus on multiplication and division in algebra and arithematic likely adapted from Nasir al-Din Tusi's Kitab ad-darb wa'l-qisma fi 'ilm al-jabr wa al-hisab compiled in the thirteenth century.<br /><br />This codex was evidently copied in a few different hands and over a period of time with contemporary annotations to the margin; this suggests that the codex was intended for study in a 'madrasa' setting and used by piers for reference. Furthermore the combined Ottoman and Persian stylistic influences on the script suggest copying in Tabriz in the seventeenth century shortly after the area was recaptured by the Safavids after 18 years of Ottoman rule.<br /> Western Safavid Persia, possibly Tabriz, dated 1086 (?) Fischer 1861-1916 was a German physiologist and mathematician earning a doctorate degree from the Franke Foundation in Halle an der Saale in 1885 under Felix Klein. His main interest was the mechanics of the muscles and joints of the human musculoskeletal system. He was an editor at the Acta Mathematica where he corresponded with Poincare to correct a book in which he found a number of errors. He was also president of the Swedish Society of Actuaries. He is best known however for the Phragmén-Lindelöf principle an extension of the maximum modulus principle of complex analysis to unbounded domains. <br /> <br /> 4. His main interests were in applied mathematics and he wrote on mathematical physics potential and electrodynamics. He was also editor of Mathematische Annalen.<br /> <br /> 5. The letter is signed by Lerch and dated October 1890. These papers are the first in a series dealing with the general theory of functions the most significant of which constitutes construction of continuous functions having no derivative. These works were written quite early. Lerch 1860-1922 showed exceptional abilities while still studying at the Czech Technical University at Prague. Before 1896 he published more than 110 scientific papers in domestic as well as prominent foreign journals. Much of his work concerned mathematical analysis including theories of infinite series of the gamma function of elliptic functions and the integral calculus.<br /> <br /> Weierstrass is generally referred to as the father of modern analysis. He made significant contributions and advancements in the field of calculus of variations. Numerous theories and functions bear his name.<br /> <br /> 6. With annotations throughout probably by the author for another edition.<br /> First edition of Méray’s famous work Radical theory based exclusively on the general properties of power series. <br /> <br /> Méray 1835-1911 is remembered for having anticipated clearly and with only minor differences of style Cantor’s theory of irrational numbers one of the main steps in the arithmetization of analysis. Of interest an earlier “arithmetical†theory of irrational numbers was propounded by Weierstraass in his lectures when he introduced the real numbers as sums of sequences of rational numbers. Dedekind also seems to have developed his theory of irrationals at an earlier date.<br /> <br /> No copies of Phragmén Lerch or Méray are located by OCLC. Vieweg unknown
