‎Édition originale. Oeuvre essentielle du bibliographe et mathématicien fondé sur de nombreuses pièces manuscrites, dont des correspondances de Galilée, Fermat, Descartes, et le premier à révéler l'importance de Léonard de Pise. Libri (1803-1869) fut le précurseur des paléographes et codicologues du XXe siècle et collecta une bibliothèque très importante qui comptait plus de 1800 manuscrits et 40000 volumes imprimés provenant de ventes aux enchères, d’acquisitions d’importants fonds privés et, en partie, comme cela fut prouvé par la suite, par des détournements de fonds publics.Italien de naissance, Guglielmo Libri s’exila en France et obtient la naturalisation en 1833. Ses travaux mathématiques lui apportèrent la reconnaissance du monde savant, de solides amitiés, et de nombreuses positions institutionnelles. Libri utilisa ses privilèges pour dérober nombre de manuscrits précieux des bibliothèques françaises mal décrits ou pas décrits du tout dans les catalogues déjà existants dont il était chargé de dresser un inventaire (la Laurentienne lorsque qu’il enseignait en Italie et pour les principales bibliothèques françaises, Royale, Arsenal, Observatoire…. Des soupçons commencèrent à peser sur lui à partir de 1846 et son arrestation devenant imminente, il s’enfuit à Londres en 1848 en emportant 18 malles pleines de manuscrits et de livres rares. Dix ventes organisées entre 1849 et 1865 firent grand bruit parmi les amateurs du livre. Condamné par contumace en 1850, il conserva quelques défenseurs dont Prosper Mérimée. Dans les années 1880, sa culpabilité, déjà bien établie, fut prouvée de manière irréfutable et la France poursuivit ses démarches pour récupérer une partie du butin. L’affaire Libri a contribué considérablement à la réorganisation du patrimoine livresque de la France.« Forcé, pour satisfaire ma curiosité, de recourir aux ouvrages originaux, je fus bientôt frappé par la multitude de faits curieux, d'observations intéressantes, que contenaient des livres presque entièrement oubliés de nos jours ; et je ne tardai pas à découvrir une foule de documents précieux, gisant inédits dans la poussière des bibliothèques, et menacés d'une destruction prochaine. Les pertes immenses que l'incurie de nos pères avait déjà produites me faisaient prévoir celles qui nous menaçaient encore ».Exemplaire de Prix du Lycée Descartes, attribué le 14 mars 1849 pour le second prix de géométrie dans la classe de mathématique élémentaire, 1ère année par l'élève Joly de Bammeville.Bel exemplaire malgré des rousseurs.‎

Nel volume del ’29 c’è la dedica dell’autore “A sua eccellenza il signor conte Prospero Balbo...” Nel 1827 Libri pubblicava le sue prime tre “mémoires”, ripubblicate anche nel volume del ’29, con lo stesso titolo ma qualificato come “Tome premier” (mentre nel ’27 si usava “Premier Cahier”). Il “Tome I” contiene altre tre “mémoires” e una parte finale in cui si annunciano i saggi successivi (non sarà mai stampato un altro volume di “Mémoires...”: alcuni dei lavori annunciati alla fine del Tome I sarebbero stati raccolti e pubblicati nel 1835 dal matematico tedesco August Leopold Crelle). Entrambi i libri furono stampati a spese dell’autore in pochissime copie: quello del ’29 ha uno strappo marginale nei fogli di errata, che non ne impedisce la lettura. Two books. In 1827 Libri published on his own expenses his first three “Mémoires…”, reprinted in the ’29 book under the same title (but the ’29’s one is named “Tome premier” while the ’27’s is “premier cahier”). In the “Tome premier” there are three “mémoires” more and a final part in which the next works are annonced. But there wouldn’t have been more volumes of “Mémoires”. Both books are printed at author’s expense and are very rare. The one from ’29 has a light damage on errata leaves, and a dedication of the author to Prospero Balbo.‎

Aryabhata (b.476 AD) is credited for his pioneering work of extracting tantra sastra, (I.e. astronomy and mathematics) from vedas (generally known as the oldest embodiment of knowledge) to the level of common usage as he appropriately says in his Aryabhatiyam.In 1150 AD, Bhaskaracarya (b.1114 AD), renowned mathematician and astronomer of Vedic tradition composed Lilavati as the first part of this larger world called Siddhanta-Siromani, a comprehensive exposition of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, number theory and related topics, 201 pp. The names 'Bhaskaracarya' and 'Lilavati' are well-known. If a student displays outstanding talent in Mathematics, the school teacher lovingly calls the student ìSecond Bhaskaracaryaî. Many legends about Lilavati are in vogue. It is but natural that Indians have a special interest in Bhaskaracarya and his works, especially the Lilavati. Professor N.H. Phadke has taken great pains in the preparation of the present work A New Light on Lilavati, thus filling a void. In the Lilavati, Arithmetic is presented as an enjoyable playful activity. Professor Phadke has admirably succeeded in preserving this spirit in the A New Light on Lilavati. Since Professor Phadke studied many books in Sanskrit, Hindi, English and Marathi, he could have easily given scholarly notes and references all over. Lilavati has been used as a standard textbook for about 800 years. This lucid, scholarly and literary presentation has been translated into several languages of the world. Bhaskaracarya himself never gave any derivations of his formulae. N.H. Phadke (1902-1973) worked hard to construct proofs of several mathematical methods and formulae given in original Lilavati. The present work is an enlargement of his Marathi work and attempts a thorough mathematical explanation of definitions, formulae, short cuts and methodology as intended by Bhaskara. Stitches are followed by literal translations so that the reader can enjoy and appreciate the beauty of accurate and musical presentation in Lilavati. The book is useful to school going children, sophomores, teachers, scholars, historians and those working for cause of mathematics.‎
