XII 334 2 X 2 170 2 pp. � Two rare and important first editions by the famous Italian mathematician logical philosopher pioneer of symbolic logic and a founder of mathematical logic and set theory Giuseppe Peano uniting his first publication in logic with his introduction of the basic elements of geometric calculus. <br><br>The present "Calcolo geometrico secondo l'Ausdehningslehre de H. Grassmann" contains a twenty-page long preliminary section on the operations of deductive logic which constitutes Peano' s very first publication on the subject for which he is most famous namely logic. This work appeared the year before his seminal "Arithmetices Principia." in which he further improves his logical symbolism which is introduced in the preliminary section of the present work. "This section which has almost no connection with the rest of the text is a synthesis of and improvement on some of the work of Boole Schr�der Peirce and McColl." D.S.B. X:442.<br><br>In the other present work "Applicazioni geometriche del calcolo infinitesimale" Peano introduces the basic elements of geometric calculus and gives new definitions for the length of an arc and for the area of a curved surface. This important work in which not only his geometrical calculus is introduced but in which he also presented several new geometrical discoveries is based on his lectures on infinitesimal calculus and its application to geometry from 1885. "The treatise "Applicazioni geometriche del calcolo infinitesimal" 1887 was based on a course Peano began teaching at the University of Turin in 1885 and contains the beginnings of his "geometrical calculus" here still influenced by Bellavitis' method of equipolences new forms of remainders in quadrature formulas new definitions of length of an arc of a curve and of area of a surface the notion of a figure tangent to a curve a determination of the error term in Simpson's formula and the notion of the limit of a variable figure. There is also a discussion of the measure of a point set of additive functions of sets and of integration applied to sets. Peano here generalized the notion of measure that he had introduced in 1883." D.S.B. X:443. <br><br>Peano 1858 -1932 studied mathematics at the University of Turin where he was employed just after graduating 1880 and where he stayed almost all of his life devoting this to mathematics. After having graduated with honours he was employed to assist first Enrico D'Ovidio and then the renowned Angelo Genocchi who possessed the chair of Infinitesimal calculus. In 1890 Peano became extraordinary professor and in 1895 ordinary professor of infinitesimal calculus at the Unversity of Turin. <br><br>Cellerino Guiseppe Peano e la sua scuola. ill., br. Miracoli, oroscopi, superstizioni, numerologia, profezie... Quanto c'è di vero in tutte queste manifestazioni più o meno "occulte"? Perché vi ricorriamo così spesso quando non riusciamo a chiarire un fatto apparentemente inspiegabile? Il più delle volte, non c'è motivo di cercare una spiegazione... semplicemente perché non c'è! Anziché scomodare poteri occulti, influssi astrali od oracoli quantomeno nebulosi, è sufficiente ammettere l'esistenza del caso e che, laddove crediamo di intuire un messaggio nascosto, si tratta solo di una coincidenza (o di un'abile manipolazione dell'imbroglione di turno). Ennio Peres, con lo spirito arguto dell'enigmista - e ancor più del matematico - non si limita a sfatare leggende metropolitane, superstizioni e plateali fandonie, ma riconduce gli "scherzi del caso" a un gioco raffinato e stimolante: nelle loro infinite combinazioni, lettere, numeri e parole non sono solo un'ottima palestra per riconoscere e quindi difendersi dai capricci del caso, ma anche un'occasione di divertimento e, perché no, di arricchimento intellettuale.

This is one of several dozen books and periodicals from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this copy does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. Gli scritti piagetiani riportati in questo lavoro sono parte di una vasta opera di 1345 pagine, nella quale hanno scritto alcuni tra i più illustri rappresentanti di varie discipline: dal premio nobel per la fisica Louis de Broglie a Seymour Papert, da Jean-Blaise Grize a Pierre Greco e molti altri studiosi del periodo compreso tra il 1950 ed il 1970. The intention of the series was to "describe the method of scientific investigation" and it contains what Peirce would later describe as "the earliest formulation of a method of logical analysis that I had had the habit of alluding to as my pragmatism". <br><br>In "The Doctrine of Chances" Peirce's argument is that continuity provides a powerful engine for logic and he states that: "To be logical men must not be selfish" for "logic requires the identification of one's interests with those of an unlimited community". p. 611.<br>"In Part IV of the third of Peirce's six papers in Popular Science Monthly entitled "The Doctrine of Chances" Peirce even argued that simply being logical presupposes the ethics of self-sacrifice: "He who would not sacrifice his own soul to save the whole world is as it seems to me illogical in all his inferences collectively." To social Darwinism and to the related sort of thinking that constituted for Herbert Spencer and others a supposed justification for the more rapacious practices of unbridled capitalism Peirce referred in disgust as "The Gospel of Greed"." SEP.<br><br>In "The Probability of Induction" he compares the conceptualistic view with the materialistic view and differentiates chances from probability. In "The Order of Nature" he argues against John Stewart Mill's view that the consistency of nature is the only guarantee that induction should be explained by the doctrines of probabilities. "Deduction Induction and Hypothesis" deals with one of Peirce's seminal topics: Abductive reasoning. It is Peirce who proves that there is an "inconsistency" of the induction and that it thus does not hold in all cases - leading him to introduce the notion of abductive conclusion. Before Peirce it was a generally accepted notion that only inductive conclusions allow for the generation of a hypothesis.<br><br>Peirce is widely regarded as being one of Americas�s most influential philosophers. He also set footprints outside the world of pure logic as Italian author and Professor Umberto Eco is said to have based his famous novel The Name of The Rose partly on the logic and semiotics developed by Peirce.<br><br>Other papers of interest contained in the two volumes:<br>1. Index. This is one of several dozen books and periodicals from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this copy does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century.
