Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis the Church-Turing Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. Church was first to demonstrate that David Hilbert's Entscheidungsproblem was unsolvable. It was Church who coined the phrase "Turing machine" for Alan Turing's hypothetical universal computing machine. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. Il tema "analogia" funge da filo conduttore, pietra di paragone e pretesto critico per una ricerca sopra i principi razionali - ma non per questo "logici" - che regolano nella prassi il modo umano di vivere, di sentire e di pensare. Da un punto di vista logico, l'analogia non ha ancora trovato una convincente sistemazione, ed è dubbio se potrà mai trovarla. C'è in essa qualcosa che non quadra, e che induce a estrometterla dall'universo del discorso di rigore. Tuttavia, dopo averla rifiutata in teoria, si continua a farne uso come nulla fosse. È sufficiente porsi con onestà alcune domande (che cosa provano i ragionamenti analogici? Fino a che punto si possono considerare logici? Entro quali limiti la logica è norma del razionale? È possibile contraddistinguere i concetti nei confronti delle metafore? A quali condizioni si può parlare di un'obiettività scientifica? Per dover rivedere in maniera spregiudicata molti dei nostri più accreditati abiti mentali. Da un punto di vista filosofico, l'analogia è insostituibile. Essa è il principale strumento di mediazione fra la conoscenza scientifica (particolare) e la coscienza filosofica (universale). Autori: Enzo Melandri.
