Henderson under the Royal-Exchange 1758. 12mo. on laid paper; neat contemporary inscription on blank leaf following front free endpaper; handsomely bound in contemporary full calf sides blocked with an elaborate frame panel in gilt including eagles thistles and flowers the whole stopped at corners by enhanced crowns back gilt with five raised bands tooled in gilt all compartments tooled in gilt all edges gilt gilt doublures and dentelles marbled endpapers very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down one corner lightly bruised else a most attractive copy in period binding. With the half-title; leaves C9-11 clipped at upper outer corner with minimal loss of text. The work comprises 'Two Discourses' with separately paginated 'Prayers and Meditations relating to the Holy Communion' with unpaginated 'The Church Service'. THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. New York: New York Common Prayer and Book Society 1853. First edition thus. Original full sheep gilt morocco label gilt. Worn but a solid copy in the original publisher's binding. Twain arrived in New York City after leaving St. Louis and went to work as a type-setter at John Gray's firm on Monday August 29 1853 and stayed there until mid-October when he left for Philadelphia. He wrote home to his mother on August 31 saying that he and forty other type-setters set type for an "immense" number of books and several magazines like The Knickerbocker New York Recorder Choral Advocate Jewish Chronicle Littell's Living Age and the Irish American. Most of the books published by Gray in 1853 were religious pamphlets and some anti-slavery texts; this is one of the few substantial books he published that year. Gray's four story building was next-door to the huge Harper Brothers pre-fire complex and it is possible that they were also farmed out work by Harper for publications without using their own printer's slug. unknown

In this copy the French title appears first followed by the French prelims and the English title precedes the text. Octavo 195 x 120 mm. Ruled in red throughout; double columns parallel English and French text. Contemporary black morocco spine divided in six compartments by raised bands compartments divided saltire-wise with dotted rules with tulip-head tools and dots sides gilt with a central lozenge built up of massed tools enclosed by an outer lozenge of rolls and flower-heads cornerpieces outer French fillet in gilt turn-ins gilt with floral roll comb-marbled endpapers gilt edges. An attractive copy with a little expert furbishment repairs to head and joints corners consolidated gilt retouched internally clean. A very good royal-ruled copy. hardcover

Professionally rebound not recently retaining most of the leather from the original or early top board calf light rubbed some loss of leather on corner of top board. Generally a very good clean firm binding. Internally small abrasion hole on margin of title page minor repair to inner margin of title page early annotaion in ink partially erased on verso of title some light browning to edges of about 10 pages. His work is represented in many private collections and can be seen in several public collections overseas and in the UK including the V&A National Art Library and the British Library. The Book of Common Prayer as Printed at Edinburgh 1637.
London: William Pickering 1844. Among the most beautiful specimens of typography that have appeared since the invention of printing First Pickering edition a triumph of Victorian book design; this splendidly bound copy was presented by John Pierpont Morgan to the Church Club of New York. Pickering a champion of the highest standards of typography and design produced a series of six facsimiles of famous Tudor and Stuart prayer books. This is a facsimile of the Scottish edition of 1637 which sought to impose Episcopal liturgy on the Presbyterian Church of Scotland deepening religious tensions and helping to spark the Civil War. It was called by Keynes "a monument of what could be achieved by good taste and craftsmanship" p. 32 and by Warren "among the most beautiful specimens of typography that have appeared since the invention of printing" p. 164. Morgan founder of the Morgan Library in New York ranks among the greatest of all book collectors and was a founder of the Church Club established in 1887 as an Episcopal forum. The Club's bookplate noting presentation is on the front pastedown and their shelf label is on the rear. Folio 338 x 226 mm. Printed in black and red in Old English type by Charles Whittingham of Chiswick on Pouncy's handmade paper. Near-contemporary brown morocco by Riviere endpapers watermarked 1854 spine and front cover lettered in gilt covers panelled in black and gilt with gilt centrepieces gilt turn-ins gilt edges. Whitledge deceased at the Bible and Ball in Ave Mary Lane London. to extra illustrated title page. 12mo. 13 x 7.5cm. A2- T12. Engraved portrait frontis. of George I who had died two years before the title page date so we are presuming that both the frontis and the extra engraved title have come from an earlier edition of the prayer book. This volume also includes 49 engraved plates printed on only one side of paper - the reverse being blank. Bound in early 18th century full crimson morocco decorated in blind slightly worn along edges. All page edges gilt. Blank endpapers to front of volume contain 4 separate ownership inscriptions. One central gathering of pages and a few odd leaves are slightly proud of main contents. Inner hinges visible at front and centre but sound. Final blank leaf is loose. Apart from these faults a clean and sound copy of a pocket prayer book from the early 18th century. unknown

Also ex-library with a Cathedral bookplate inside the front cover and faded white call numbers on the spine no other library markings. Griffiths 1807/3. John Reeves was gazetted King's Printer in 1800 and held the appointment for 29 years until his death. Between 1801 and 1815 he issued some 25 editions of the Book of Common Prayer each printed by others on his behalf. This edition was printed by C. Whittingham. The plates in this copy are all dated February 1807. The Companion to the Altar was printed for Scatcherd and Letterman by Rider and Webb by assignment from T. Beecroft and was issued 'in various sizes so as to bind up with the different editions of the Common Prayer Book' ref. note at foot of title page. The Irish poet hymnist and lyricist Nahum Tate 1652-1715 became England's poet laureate in 1692. He is best remembered for the New Version of the Psalms of David first published in 1696 in which he collaborated with Nicholas Brady. Tate wrote the words to a number of hymns of which the most famous is the Christmas carol known today by its opening line 'While shepherds watched their flocks by night'. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas in 1689. Nicholas Brady 1659-1726 was an Anglican clergyman and poet also born in Ireland. John Reeves unknown

Extra-illustrated with a complete suite of engravings A handsome binding made for the Bible trade in contemporary red morocco. This style is sometimes called "Chippendale" acknowledging the contemporary trend towards the use of decorations on bookbindings resembling those popular in other forms of decorative art. This copy has been extra-illustrated with a complete suite of 59 engraved plates The Liturgy of the Church of England London printed by Edward Ryland 1755. The designs are by Samuel Wale 1721-1786 one of the most prolific book illustrators of the 18th century this suite being mentioned in Wale's biography in ODNB though not listed in ESTC. Among the engravers was the eldest of the copperplate printer Edward Ryland's seven sons William Wynne Ryland 1733-1783 a highly skilled engraver who was hanged for issuing two forged bills drawn on the East India Company. Provenance: John William Beaumont Pease Lord Wardington 1936-2019 bookplate; Sotheby's Wardington Library of English Bibles 12 July 2006 lot 126. Large quarto 275 x 210 mm. Extra-illustrated with a suite of 59 plates including title engraved by François Ravenet Charles Grignion Louis Gérard Scotin Walker and William Wynne Ryland after Samuel Wale. Contemporary red morocco spine gilt all over within six compartments between raised bands sides richly decorated in gilt with wide border of rococo scrollwork flowers and insects enclosing a central green morocco onlay enclosing the Sacred Monogram "J.H.S." surrounded by an oval red morocco onlay tooled with stars and dots within an oval onlay of blue morocco tooled with cherubs' heads stars dots and swags the whole surrounded by a gilt gloriole gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers gilt edges. Bookplate of Jeremy & Penny Martin. Small areas of rubbing to joints sig. A4 with marginal tears at upper inner corner and outer edge neatly closed I4 with closed tear at foot entering 10 lines of text but without loss a few minor blemishes still very good overall. Contemporary red morocco gilt An attractive Oxford prayer book in a characteristic red morocco binding of the period. A closely related binding is recorded in Davis Gift 143 with a similar overall design and also with small stag stamps which is identified as a London binding from c.1693. The design is similar to those employed by the Spaniel Binder. Two parts in one vol. octavo 197 x 118 mm. Text ruled in red. Contemporary red morocco sides elaborately gilt including stags and small urns with flowering stems spine similarly gilt in compartments marbled endpapers gilt and gauffered edges. Extremities slightly rubbed headcaps pulled at ends; occasional light browning quire S in first work brittle with a few small holes and tears slight loss of text to lower outer corner of sig.
