The first printing of the novelette version of "The Autobiography of a Quack" first published anonymously in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY in October and November 1867. "It was a realistic account of the devices by which a dishonest and ignorant physician proceeds and it gave a veracious picture of the seamy side of life in Philadelphia and other large cities. Homeopathy spiritualism and other pet aversions of the orthodox physician were treated in a humorous way and the cold-blooded manner in which the quack tells his story made it a successful piece of irony." - Quinn American Fiction p. 311. "The Case of George Dedlow" Mitchell's first published story was published anonymously and without his knowledge in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY in July 1866. It is largely a realistic story of the feelings both physical and mental of an army surgeon who lost both arms and legs in a battle which occurred during the American Civil War. The satire becomes clear at the end when Dedlow is briefly united with his legs during a spiritualistic seance. Some readers missed the point and according to Mitchell "the spiritual incident at the end of the story was received with joy by the spiritualists as a valuable proof of the truth of their beliefs." "In 1881 one of the authors of this essay pointed out that the previous descriptions of Sydenham's chorea were imperfect and that its symptoms admitted of classification into clinical species or at least varieties. Taking Dr. Weir Mitchell's1 grouping as a basis the cases at his clinic have within a year been re-examined with care and with corroborative results. From the text-books one is led to believe that the movements of chorea follow a definite type in all cases with only occasional variations. It is claimed that the movements are continuous when the disease is advanced rendering voluntary muscular acts impossible or capable of completion with the greatest difficulty; that the movements are increased by voluntary acts though sometimes for a time quieted during such effort The movements are said to be at first simply awkward and incoordinate-a condition which gradually develops into a constant irregular spasm clonic in character. This includes practically all that can be found in the books relaiting to the movements of chorea save the delineation to be found in Dr. Weir Mitchell to be quoted later. In ibis .study an attempt has been made to elaborate more fully the descriptions of the choreiform movements. Some of the cases cited present symptoms familiar enough and are examples of the type usually described. They are briefly reported in order to complete the picture of chorea and that they may be contrasted with the less familiar and if not unrecognized certainly undescribed types. The histories are purposely condensed since much of the data does not in any way pertain to the subject under discussion but full notes of all the cases are accessible." He is considered the father of medical neurology and he discovered causalgia complex regional pain syndrome and erythromelalgia and pioneered the rest cure.
