br. La storia delle riflessioni umane sul cosmo, dall'astrologia babilonese alla rivoluzione quantistica: un racconto avvincente sulla nascita della scienza moderna e su come la fisica fondamentale stia regredendo alle sue radici prescientifiche. All'inizio del Seicento, Galileo si liberò dal giogo dell'antica filosofia platonica e aristotelica. Affermando che la comprensione della realtà si sarebbe dovuta basare su ciò che possiamo osservare e non sul pensiero puro, Galileo rivoluzionò drasticamente la nostra visione del mondo naturale. In questo modo inventò quella che è stata chiamata scienza e preparò il terreno a Keplero, Newton ed Einstein. Ma all'inizio del Ventesimo secolo la scienza inizia a cambiare rotta. Quando la fisica quantistica condusse in regni sempre più lontani da ciò che si poteva osservare direttamente, i teorici furono costretti ad affidarsi alle virtù estetiche della matematica per sviluppare la loro concezione della realtà fisica. Per molti fisici, il potere della matematica iniziò a sostituire le intuizioni scientifiche su cui si erano basati i predecessori. Questo processo, però, rese le loro teorie sempre piú resistenti all'esame sperimentale e all'osservazione. Di conseguenza, oggi gran parte della fisica teorica è ancora una volta più simile alla filosofia di Platone che al modello secolare di scienza da cui ha avuto origine. Ma la scienza che ha perso ogni collegamento con i fenomeni misurabili, si chiede David Lindley in questo libro, è ancora scienza? «Immaginare che la fisica potesse rendere conto di ogni singolo dettaglio della costruzione e dei contenuti del nostro universo era senza dubbio esagerato, ma ora la ricerca sembra essere finita all'estremo opposto. Secondo l'ipotesi del multiverso, la risposta a quasi ogni domanda su come o perché il nostro universo ha l'aspetto che ha è che una risposta non esiste. Nel nostro universo le cose hanno questo aspetto, ma in qualche altro universo ne hanno uno diverso. È un bel passo indietro rispetto alle stravaganti speranze di qualche decennio fa. In più, ne deriva una domanda provocatoria: esattamente, che cosa stanno cercando di ottenere oggi gli studiosi di fisica fondamentale? Se le loro teorie non hanno uno specifico potere esplicativo riguardo al nostro universo in particolare, a quale domanda più generale, se ne esiste una, stanno cercando di rispondere? Questo nuovo libro è la mia esplorazione di quella domanda e giunge ad alcune conclusioni che pochi fisici che si occupano di questioni fondamentali o cosmologiche saranno felici di sentire».
