"OCCHIALINI, Augusto Raffaele (Raffaello). – Nacque a Fossombrone l’11 ottobre 1878, terzogenito di Paolo e di Barbara Mei. Ammesso alla Scuola normale superiore di Pisa, vi si laureò in fisica con il massimo dei voti e lode nell’anno accademico 1903-04, discutendo una tesi sulla costante dielettrica dell’aria in relazione colla densità di questa. Dopo la laurea rimase all’Istituto di fisica di Pisa, collaborando con il professore di fisica sperimentale Angelo Battelli, di cui fu assistente nel 1904-06 e aiuto nel 1906-07. Assistente per la meteorologia nel 1907-09, lo fu nuovamente per la fisica sperimentale nel 1909-10 e aiuto nel 1910-16. Nel laboratorio dell’Istituto di fisica, notevolmente modernizzato da Battelli, si compivano anche ricerche avanzate di spettroscopia e con una tesi sulla spettroscopia nei gas si laureò con Occhialini, nel 1913-14, anche Rita Brunetti, destinata a divenire uno dei massimi esponenti di tale disciplina. A very good copy collated and complete. ---- <br> <br> VERY RARE FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION of the announcement of the electromagnetic effect preceeded ony by a half-sheet of text privately printed on behalf of the author the same year in a very small number and which is of utmost rarity. Also included in this volume is "Neuere electro-magnetische Versuche von Oerstedt in Kopenhagen" pp. 364-369 and Oersted's report on the first isolation of piperine pp. 80-82. <br> "Oersted was a disciple of die German school of Nationalphilosophie which believed in the unity of physical forces. He had predicted the existence of the electro-magnetic effect as early as 1812 in defiance of current scientific doctrines disallowing the possibility of conversion of forces and despite Coulomb's apparent proof that electricity and magnetism were distinct phenomena. He set out to deduce from the nature of electricity the conditions under which it was converted to magnetism and to prove their existence by experiment. His efforts were unsuccessful until in die winter of 1819-1820 he placed a magnetic needle parallel to a current-carrying wire and saw that the needle was disturbed. Resuming his experiments in the summer of 1820 Oersted ascertained that a circular magnetic field surrounded his current-carrying wire and that a magnetic needle brought into this field would set itself tangent to the circle. Oersted's discovery opened up a new epoch in the history of physics making possible Ampère's creation of electrodynamics and Faraday's demonstration of the unity of all forms of electricity" Norman. <br> "In 'Experiments and Observations on Electricity' first published in London 1751 Benjamin Franklin stated his theory that the nature of lightning is electrical. In 1752 with his kite experiments he proved it and was on the way to demonstrating the identity of all forms of electricity. In 1760 however J. H. van Swiden dismissed the possibility of an affinity between electricity and magnetism De Attractione Leiden. In 1802 on the other hand Adam Walker in the second edition of his A System of Familiar Philosophy first edition 1799 among many striking opinions on the monistic nature of electricity light and heat declared categorically 'I think we have infinite data in favour of an electro-magnetic fluid'. Oersted the son of an impoverished apothecary in Rudkjoping in 1812 discussed in his Ansicht der chemischen Naturgesetze 'View of the Natural Laws of Chemistry' the identity of chemical and electrical forces. . It was after lecturing to students in his own rooms in the Noerragade Copenhagen in 1819 or 1820 that he invited a few of them to stay on to witness an experiment - the possible deflection of a compass-needle by an adjacent electric current. The experiment was successful; but only just; and Oersted repeated it many times before venturing on 21 July to proclaim the identity of magnetism and electricity in this four-page paper entitled 'Experiments relative to the Effect of the Contiguity of Electricity to a Magnetic Needle'. Lev Borisovich Okun 1929 -2015 Was A Soviet Theoretical Physicist. He Worked Since 1954 At The Institute For Theoretical And Experimental Physics In Moscow Whose Theoretical Physics Laboratory He Headed For 30 Years; Was Professor At The Moscow Institute For Physics And Technology; And Published Some 300 Papers And Several Books On The Theory Of Elementary Particles. In The Field Of Strong Interactions The Famous Okun-Pomeranchuk Theorem On The Equality Of Cross Sections For Scattering Of The Particles From The Same Isomultiplet At Asymptotically High Energies Was Proved In 1956. In The 70S He And Co-Authors Developed A New Method Of Quantum Chromodynamics Sum Rules That Became Known In The Literature As The "Itep Sum Rules". One Of Okun's Favorite Subjects Was. From His Early Works He Contributed Several Fundamental Results To The Study Of Weak Interactions Such As The Conclusion That Violation Of P-Parity In -Decay Also Means The Violation Of C-Parity 1957 Together With Ioffe And Rudik As Well As An Evaluation Of The Difference Between The Masses Of Neutral K-Mesons With Bruno Pontecorvo 1957. Okun Introduced The Term "Hadron" In A Plenary Talk At The 1962 International Conference On High Energy Physics. His Book "Weak Interaction Of Elementary Particles" Published In 1963 Became A Textbook And A Desktop Reference Material For Several Generations Of Students And Academics. This Book That Appeared Before The Quark Model Was Based On One Of The First Successful Composite Models Of Hadrons The Sakata-Okun Model That He Was Developing Since 1958. In This Model All Known Particles Were Constructed Of Three Sakaton Proto-Particles Predecessors Of Quarks. He Had Predicted The Existence Of And ' Mesons And Formulated The Selection Rule Q = S For Semi-Leptonic Decays Of Strange Particles. In 1964 In The Paper Written Together With Pomeranchuk And Kobzarev The Idea Of "Mirror World" Came Into Existence. "Mirror Matter" Is Still A Possible Candidate For Dark Matter. He Has Made Seminal Contributions To The New Field Of Research At The Intersection Of Particle Physics Cosmology And Astrophysics. A Method For Calculating Relic Abundance Of Elementary Particles During The Expansion Of The Universe Was Developed In His 1965 Paper With Zel'dovich And Pikel'ner. They Performed A Calculation Of The Abundance Of Free Quarks. Non-Observation Of Free Quarks Was One Of The Arguments For Quark Confinement. Now The Approach That Emerged From This Paper Became A Standard Tool In The Studies Of The Origin Of Dark Matter In The Universe. Vacuum Domain Walls Investigated By Him In 1974 Were The First Macroscopic Object Of Qft That Could Determine The Evolution Of The Universe. In The Same Year Okun Together With Voloshin And Kobzarev Published A Pioneering Paper On The Decay Of The False Vacuum-A Subject That Unexpectedly Became Of A Relevance To The Physical Vacuum In Our Universe After The Discovery Of The Higgs Boson With Mass 125 Gev. He Has Served As A Member Of The Scientific Policy Committees Of Cern Ssc And Desy. He Was A Member Of The Russian Academy Of Sciences And The Academia Europaea An Honorary Member Of The New York Academy Of Sciences And A Fellow Of The Institute Of Physics. <br/> <br/> Israel Program For Scientific Translations hardcover
