L'Ottica dello Smith in Italia fu conosciuta essenzialmente grazie alla presente traduzione francese di L. Pézenas; l'opera comprende alcuni libri: il primo, il trattato popolare, è un vero e proprio corso di ottica sperimentale. Il libro secondo tratta l'ottica geometrica, la rifrazione e la riflessione, le aberrazioni dei telescopi e dei microscopi, ecc. Una tavola più volte ripiegata, fuori testo, posta tra le pagine 4 e 5, riporta "the equations used in Electric Motive Power in inch-pound-minute and centimetre-gramme-second units in parallel columns". Nell'angolo inferiore esterno del foglio con le pagine 237-238, leggero segno di piegatura. Piccola macchia di inchiostro nel margine superiore di pagina 249, nel margine interno di pagina 257 e nell'angolo inferiore esterno delle pagine dalla 325 alla 337, in tutti i casi molto lontano dal testo. Una macchia di inchiostro, di 3 x 1,1 cm. anche nel margine interno di pagina 256: la macchia lambisce la figura 131, ma non interessa il testo. La numerazione, dopo la pagina 340, riporta le pagine 340A E 340B, dunque le pagine complessive dell'opera, numerate con cifre arabe, sono 411.
