The Radiation Laboratory Was Organized Into Two Sections One For Incoming Radar Signals And One For Outgoing Radar Signals. Bacher Was Appointed To Handle The Incoming Signals Section. Here He Gained Valuable Experience In Administration Coordinating Not Just The Efforts Of His Scientists But Also Those Of General Electric And Rca. In 1942 Bacher Was Approached By Robert Oppenheimer To Join The Manhattan Project At Its New Laboratory In Los Alamos New Mexico. It Was At Bacher's Insistence That Los Alamos Became A Civilian Rather Than A Military Laboratory. At Los Alamos Bacher Headed The Project's P Physics Division And Later Its G Gadget Division. Bacher Worked Closely With Oppenheimer And The Two Men Discussed The Project's Progress On A Daily Basis. After The War Bacher Became Director Of The Laboratory Of Nuclear Studies At Cornell. He Also Served On The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission The Civilian Agency That Replaced The Wartime Manhattan Project And In 1947 He Became One Of Its Inaugural Commissioners. He Left In 1949 To Become Head Division Of Physics Mathematics And Astronomy At Caltech. He Brought Richard Feynman From Cornell To Caltech But Was Unable To Convince Feynman To Work For The Government Also. ill., br. Quando abbiamo in mano un oggetto, per esempio questo libro, ne sperimentiamo in primo luogo la consistenza materiale, ovvero il fatto che possegga una «massa». In apparenza, niente di più stabile e rassicurante. Eppure, se potessimo scendere via via nelle profondità della materia (le fibre di cellulosa che compongono la carta, le molecole della cellulosa, gli atomi di ogni molecola...), ci accorgeremmo di come quella stabilità sia ingannevole. Le «particelle elementari» che compongono ogni atomo, infatti, non solo fluttuano nello «spazio vuoto», ma appaiono come uno «zoo» in cui ogni specie manifesta proprietà - almeno a un primo sguardo - «del tutto assurde». Nello spiegare questa visione controintuitiva e paradossale, Jim Baggott da un lato risale alle varie concezioni della «massa» nella storia della ricerca filosofico-scientifica, dai pensatori greci alla meccanica newtoniana; dall'altro mette a fuoco le conseguenze profonde delle nuove conoscenze fisico-cosmologiche, dalla celebre scoperta di Einstein per cui «la massa di un corpo è la misura del suo contenuto di energia» alle implicazioni del Modello Standard della fisica delle particelle: disponendo queste ultime entro l'azione dei «campi quantistici», il Modello Standard assimila infatti la massa più a un «comportamento» che a una «proprietà», e la rende elusiva e inafferrabile. In questa prospettiva spiazzante - che Baggott trasmette con la consueta combinazione di chiarezza espositiva e verve stilistica - la posta in gioco è molto più del concetto di massa: è la natura stessa della materia, di un universo le cui fondamenta risultano molto meno «solide, certe e affidabili» di quello che abbiamo a lungo pensato.

ill., br. Il suo acronimo (lqg) suona come uno dei tanti, criptici e intimidatori, che gremiscono la fisica contemporanea. In realtà, la «gravità quantistica a loop» - oggetto del nuovo libro di Jim Baggott - è una delle declinazioni più promettenti nell'ambito della «teoria quantistica della gravità». La quale, a sua volta, è uno dei tentativi più accreditati di rispondere a una sfida senza precedenti nella storia della fisica: l'armonizzazione di due teorie di grande successo ma tra loro inconciliabili. La prima è la relatività generale di Einstein, che descrive il comportamento della materia su larga scala in uno spazio-tempo curvo: base del modello standard cosmologico del big bang, ha avuto una delle conferme più spettacolari nella recente scoperta delle onde gravitazionali. La seconda è la meccanica quantistica, che descrive invece le proprietà e il comportamento della materia alle scale più piccole: sotto forma di teoria dei campi, è alla base del modello standard della fisica delle particelle, e in questo ambito l'ultima convalida sperimentale è stata la scoperta del bosone di Higgs. Il punto è che il «doppio trionfo» delle due teorie - costruite su interpretazioni incompatibili dello spazio e del tempo - è servito solo a far apparire l'universo ancora più elusivo e misterioso, se non più bizzarro. Compito della lqg è dunque inventare un nuovo, comune tessuto teorico. Ricostruendo i termini della sfida, Baggott si sofferma a lungo sugli scienziati che più si sono adoperati (e continuano ad adoperarsi) per vincerla, come Lee Smolin e Carlo Rovelli; e, pur senza nascondere fino a che punto sia ardua, ne sottolinea l'importanza fondamentale grazie a un pensiero di Laozi: «Anche un viaggio di mille miglia comincia con un primo passo».

Non solo, infatti, ne ricostruisce la genesi teorica, ma ripercorre tutte le stazioni di avvicinamento all'eclatante risultato di Ginevra: il legame tra i primi acceleratori degli anni Venti e le collisioni di particelle nei raggi cosmici; la messa a punto del ciclotrone da parte di Lawrence; il contributo di Van der Meer, il cui metodo di "raffreddamento stocastico" ha permesso al gruppo di Rubbia l'individuazione dei bosoni W e Z, decisivi per arrivare alla scoperta del bosone di Higgs; e le svolte successive del LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider) e dell'ormai leggendario LHC (Large Hadron Collider), che con i suoi 1600 magneti superconduttori ha permesso di sviluppare energie senza precedenti.
