‎One of the few scarce original stenciled copies of the ""Journal of Jocular Physics, Vol. III,"" the 1955-volume of the privately circulated amateur-comedy-journal that Bohr's students made on the occasions of Bohr's most important birthdays (beginning with his 50th in 1935), in this case his 70th. The ""Journal"" is an eclectic blend of funny and clever stories, songs, poems, aphorisms, humorous descriptions of recent developments in physics, etc., all written in an informal tone with the underlying subject being Bohr's birthday.Since 1929 most of the greatest physicists of the 20th century had been gathering around Niels Bohr for a conference in Copenhagen at the Bohr Institute. Since 1931 this conference had also included a skit prepared by the youngest of the participants, the ""Copenhagen Faust"" of 1932 being the most famous and important of them. It is this skit that later develops into the ""Journal of Jocular Physics"" which was prepared and compiled for Bohr's 50th, 60th and 70th birthdays, the first in 1935, the second in 1945, and the third (the present) in 1955. The 1955 ""Jocular Physics"" was the last of them. ""The early decades of the present century witnessed the heady development of the Quantum Theory of the atom, and during that era the roads of theoreticians of all nationalities led, not to Rome, but to Copenhagen, the home city of Niels Bohr, who was the first to formulate the correct atomic model. It became customary at the end of each spring conference at Blegdamsvej 15 (the street address of Bohr's Institute of Theoretical Physics) to produce a stunt pertaining to recent developments in physics.However Copenhagen was also the home of abundant humor. As a respite from the intensive and highly competitive efforts taking place to characterize fundamental interactions on an atomic scale, physicists took the time to develop satirical letters, articles, plays and other works."" (Gamow, Thirty Years that Shook Physics, pp. 167-68).In his Report at the Niels Bohr Archive Symposium, ""Copenhagen' and beyond: Drama meets history of science"", Yu.V. Gaponov accounts for the history of ""physical art"": ""The 1950s and 1960s were the golden age of the utmost prosperity in Physics. The atomic revolution having opened for the scientists a new world of quanta led soon to the nuclear fission discovery and to the first steps in techniques to dominate the atomic energy. The realization of national atomic programs which first took place in USA and then in Russia (USSR) and Great Britain had attracted the whole world's attention and placed Physics and the natural sciences in general in a top position. Being concerned with matters of physics became then exclusive and prestigious and physicists as individuals attracted the society's attention. They became heroes of literature, theater, movies, press. This process was observed in many advanced countries. It was also typical for the former USSR of those times, although owing to special social circumstances it had acquired some particular forms. One such form was the creation of ""Physical Art"" traditions... The birth of these traditions is commonly associated with the appearance at MSU PhysFac in 1960 of a Student Humor Festival called ""Birthday of Archimedes"" (later ""Physics Day"") along with a comic buffoonery opera ""Archimedes"" (authors - physicists and poets V. Kaner, V. Milyaev). However, MSU physicists consider the ""Physical Art"" traditions to have started earlier. Here are some remarkable milestones: In 1932 the well known ""Faust"" jocular opera and in 1935 the special issue of the ""Jocular Physics"" journal were written by some eminent physicists in connection with the 50th birthday of Niels Bohr.""The present 1955-volume contains numerous very funny contributions by physicists around Bohr, all based on physics humour, physics word-games etc. We have for instance ""A Voyage to Laplacia"" by L. Rosenfeld, a ""Confidential"" report ""Standardization of (physics) Papers"" by J. Lindhard,""Broken English"" by H.B.G. Casimir (""There exists today a universal language that is spoken and understood almost everywhere: it is Broken English. I am not referring to Pidgin English a highly formalized and restricted branch of B.E. but to the much more general language that is used by waiters in Hawai, prostitutes in Paris and ambassadors in Washington, by business-men from Buenos Aires, by scientists at international meetings and by dirty-postcard-peddlers in Greece, in short honourable people like myself all over the world..."" ‎Rare first edition of this work related to the 'König affair,' the renowned controversy over the principle of least action, described as ""perhaps the ugliest of all the famous scientific disputes"" (DSB VII: 442). The main figures in this highly publicized affair, which led to numerous pamphlets supporting one side or the other, were the mathematicians and scientists P. L. Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759), then head of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, and Johann Samuel Koenig (1712-1757), a member of this Academy. In 1751 Koenig presented his ""Law of least Action"". The law states that the kinetic energy of a system of mass points is equal to the sum of the kinetic energy of the motion of the system relative to the center of gravity and of the kinetic energy of the total mass of the system considered as a whole, which moves as the center of gravity of the system. ""While still in Franeker, Koenig wrote the draft of his important essay on the principle of least action, which was directed against Maupertuis. The controversy touched off by this work, which was published in March 1751, resulted in perhaps the ugliest of all the famous scientific disputes. Its principal figures were Koenig, Maupertuis, Euler, Frederick II, and Voltaire" and, as is well known, it left an unseemly stain on Euler’s otherwise untarnished escutcheon. The quarrel occupied Koenig’s last years almost completely" moreover, he had been ill for several years before it started. Koenig emerged the moral victor from this affair, in which all the great scientists of Europe—except Maupertuis and Euler—were on his side. The later finding of Kabitz testifies to Koenig’s irreproachable character.""(DSB).‎

‎First edition, offprint, with the author's presentation inscription to Professor John Tyndall - the father of the Greenhouse Effect, heat radiation and global climate research - of this important paper, in which Herschel promotes the role of the devine in the natural order. Herschel, now famous for originating the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, naming seven moons of Saturn and four moons of Uranus, his investigation in colour blindness and the chemical power of ultraviolet rays, did much to promote the public understanding of science . The present paper constitutes one of his most widely read and popular works. ""During his life John was immensely celebrated, his name epitomizing science to the public, much as that of Einstein did in the next century."" (DSB)Though intended for a popular audience ""On the Origin of Force"" is one of the most important sources for understanding Herschel's general approach to science. A contemporary review of the paper states: ""The article is well worth reading for those who wish to realise the enormous benefit which has been rendered to science by banishing the indefinite uee of the word force and by introducing the term energy, restricting the use of force to the meaning attached to it by Newton. ‎First edition of the first description of Bell System's Traffic Service Position System (TSPS). It was designed by Bell Labs in Columbus, Ohio to replace traditional cord switchboards. Research at Bell Systems was aimed at finding ways to reduce operator labor which at that time was was the largest expenditure when operating a telephone network. ""A new cordless operator position was designed to illustrate how this operator service might be implemented. Trials at New York Telephone Co. demonstrated the feasibility of both the customer dialing of the prefix and the efficiency of the new operator's position. After the trial, a development was started to add such positions, by then known as the ""Traffic Service Position"" [...]. It was an example of the electronic art forcing out the old electromechanical art with many vested interest. It was first put into use in Chicago, Illinois to replace the 4a crossbar switch. The last new 4ESS switch was set up in Atlanta in 1999 and is planned to be in operation until 2015. The great advantage with the 4ESS was its flexibility and speed. The pioneering Digital Signal Processor, DSP1 was invented by Bell Labs in the period 1977-78 with first samples tested in May 1979. ‎First publication of the first description of the world's first television satellite. Telstar I made a tremendous impact on the world by transmitting transatlantic live television. ""Telstar captured the popular imagination in a way that it is hard to believe any satellite, especially a communication satellite, could do today. According to AT&T, more than half the population of the UK watched its first transatlantic transmission, a remarkable percentage given that far fewer people than today owned television sets."" (Gavaghan, Something New under the Sun, p. 188)According to the US Space Objects Registry, Telstar 1 and 2 were still in orbit as of May 2010. The Telstar-satellites represent the true beginning of satellite communication.Telstar 1 was launched on July 10th 1962 and was the world's first active repeater satellite, the primary function of which was transmission of voice, black/white and colour television, fascimilie, and high- and low-speed data. The Telstar-project had five overall objectives"" to demonstrate broadband transmission, test operational communication satellite reliability, obtain operational experience with ground terminals and provide space radiation measurement.Telstar 1 was a medium-altitude satellite with an elliptic orbit which was completed once every 2 hours and 37 minutes. Due to Telstar's non-geosynchronous orbit, its availability for transatlantic signals was limited to 20 minutes in each orbit that passed over the Atlantic Ocean. The Telstar 2 was almost identical with Telstar 1 but had a higher orbit to reduce exposure to the damaging effect of the radiation belt. The Chief of NASA's Communications Satellite Programs wrote in 1966: ""Although not the first communications satellite, Telstar is the best known of all and is probably considered by most observers to have ushered in the era of satellite communications. This impression was a result of the tremendous impact upon the public by the first transmission of live television across the Atlantic Ocean. Telstar I was launched on July 10, 1962, and on that same day live television pictures originating in the United States were received in France.""
