brossura Il libro copre argomenti fondamentali nella fisica dei plasmi quali onde nei plasmi, instabilità e processi non lineari. Dopo una approfondita descrizione teorica vengono anche evidenziate osservazioni da satelliti di questi fenomeni in plasmi spaziali quali la ionosfera terrestre, la magnetosfera e il vento solare. L'ultima parte del libro tratta le interazioni di corpi carichi con un plasma. Nel caso di misure da satellite abbiamo a che fare con un campo magnetico esterno e col moto del satellite nel plasma. Non essendoci una teoria esatta in queste circostanze vengono usati metodi approssimati che tuttavia conducono a delle stime credibili della corrente raccolta. Anche per questi argomenti le teorie presentate sono raffrontate a misure di satellite e in particolare ai risultati della missione TSS (Tethered Satellite System).

brossura L'entanglement quantistico che, dopo il teorema fondamentale di Bell, è stato provato sperimentalmente, ci indica che a livello profondo la realtà è non locale. Questo implica d'altra parte che lo spazio tempo non è fondamentale. Il libro, che è focalizzato sull'entanglement, dopo avere introdotto proprietà essenziali della teoria dei quanti e le caratteristiche dell'entanglement, mostra alcune sue conseguenze per la fisica fondamentale. La prima è che l'entanglement ci suggerisce una oggettiva direzione del tempo. La seconda è una relazione profonda tra entanglement e gravità.

Entropia: dai cicli di Carnot ai buchi neri
brossura Il concetto di entropia è forse il più fondamentale della fisica. La sua assoluta importanza deriva da una legge: In un sistema isolato l'entropia può solo crescere o rimanere costante. Questa legge è fondamentale perché individua una freccia del tempo. In questo libro si approfondisce il concetto di entropia dalla sua definizione iniziale in termini di calore e temperatura alla sua interpretazione statistica. Ci si pone inoltre il problema della origine della entropia che sembra potersi trovare nelle interazioni tra stati quantistici. Studi teorici sui buchi neri che combinano la relatività generale con la teoria dei campi quantistici hanno indicato una strana connessione tra entropia e gravità. Le ricerche che ne sono seguite hanno stabilito che la gravità ha origine dalla entropia di stati quantistici in un mondo senza gravità.

I misteri della gravità
br. La forza di gravità è probabilmente, tra le forze fondamentali, quella con cui abbiamo più familiarità ma, al tempo stesso, è indiscutibilmente la forza da cui deriva la struttura e l'evoluzione dell'intero universo. Questo libro presenta in sostanza una storia di come ha progredito la nostra comprensione della gravità. La prima parte del libro comincia dalle prime fondamentali intuizioni di Galileo, prosegue con la teoria sistematica di Newton per arrivare infine alla teoria della gravitazione di Einstein e alle sue applicazioni cosmologiche. La seconda parte del libro tratta di idee completamente nuove che hanno avuto origine nella scoperta della relazione tra gravità, entropia e fisica quantistica ottenuta dagli studi sui buchi neri e hanno condotto fino agli sviluppi più recenti. A partire da questi studi e dalle ricerche sulla gravità quantistica si è potuto stabilire una connessione tra la gravità e l'entanglement quantistico. La gravità (quella di Newton o quella di Einstein) verrebbe a emergere da un mondo quantistico che non la contiene.

L'evoluzione della fisica
brossura Viene seguita l'evoluzione della fisica a partire dalle intuizioni di Galileo Galilei che deve a ragione essere considerato il padre di tutta la scienza moderna. Si possono distinguere diverse fasi nella evoluzione che è iniziata con una visione meccanicistica e deterministica del mondo seguita dalla introduzione del concetto più astratto di campo e il trionfo della teoria elettromagnetica di Maxwell. Delle vere rivoluzioni, i cui effetti si trasportano ai giorni nostri, hanno avuto luogo nel secolo XIX con le teorie relativistiche di Einstein, la meccanica quantistica e lo sviluppo della cosmologia. Di tutto questo si dà conto sottolineando i fatti e concetti fondamentali. Tra questi, nella fisica più recente, una relazione tra gravità e entanglement quantistico originata dai primi lavori sulla entropia dei buchi neri.

Le simmetrie della fisica
brossura Il concetto di simmetria ha una importanza primaria in fisica. Il teorema di Noether prova che, ad ogni simmetria, è associata una legge di conservazione e, viceversa, se siamo a conoscenza di una legge di conservazione per un certo fenomeno, sappiamo anche che c'è una simmetria che lo regola. Inoltre le simmetrie di gauge nelle teorie dei campi quantistici determinano le forze tra le particelle elementari.

Meccanica quantistica e direzione del tempo
br. La seconda legge della termodinamica implica una asimmetria temporale e in effetti la gran parte dei fenomeni che osserviamo sono irreversibili nel tempo. D'altra parte, le leggi della fisica relativistica ci raccontano un'altra storia. Queste leggi sono simmetriche nel tempo e implicano che le nostre nozioni di passato, presente e futuro sono solo illusioni in un mondo senza tempo. In questo libro l'autore considera la possibilità che si possa derivare una direzione oggettiva del tempo dalla meccanica quantistica. Per questo viene data una descrizione chiara delle regole misteriose del mondo quantistico e delle loro possibili interpretazioni. È dai concetti fondamentali della meccanica quantistica, quali il collasso della funzione d'onda e l'entanglement, che si possono trovare argomenti per una asimmetria del tempo. Se questi argomenti sono veri, la freccia del tempo ha una origine quantistica.
