Superior was founded in 1889 by Patrick Shouvlin who was servicing oil field equipment and quickly grew. In the 1890s his shop adopted the Superior Company name and later made arrangements with National Supply Company to distribute and market their engines. He initially produced gas engines that would run on the plentiful natural gas being produced in the Lima Ohio area at the time replacing steam which was costly to operate and maintain as well as much more dangerous. His engine was well-received and became the standard for pumping oil in the United States. Superior was purchased by National Supply in 1929 and later by White Motors in 1955. No copies located in Worldcat or NUC and printed notice indicates that the salesman was charged $ 100.00 for the book to be refunded when returned. ‎[FIRE ENGINES -- PHOTO SALES ALBUM]. [CHILDS, Wallace J (Pres)].‎

‎An exceptional salesman sample photo album with 36 linen-backed silver gelatin photographs for O.J. Childs Co. fire engines primarily pumpers as well as other fire fighting equipment from this historic fire fighting equipment manufacturers.‎

‎Utica NY: O.J. Childs Co. Fire Apparatus 138 Liberty ca. 1919-1922. 4to. 36 leaves unnumbered. linen-backed silver gelatin photos some hinged most negative numbers w/in negative at lower fore-edge all w/ typed captions & identifying text on versos a few w/ caption on recto below the image. Contemporary black-simulated calf vinyl 3-ring loose-leaf binder rounded corners yapp fore-edges minor edgewear & fraying to some of the linen backing on images minor occasional creasing indications of use wear & bumping to covers still a VG exemplar. This uncommon salesman sample photo album includes excellent original photographs of many significant O.J. Childs Co. fire engines and firefighting equipment manufactured in Utica NY following World War I. These factory images encompass Type “B†Triple Combination on REO chassis; Triple Combination Pump Chemical & Hose Car on Federal 1 1/2 ton chassis; Straight Chemical Equipment o 1921 Brookway 1 1/2 ton chassis; and many other variations thereof. O.J. Childs built their own engines like American-La France because commercial truck engines not only lacked the torque but also the endurance to drive a fire pump for hours without overheating or damaging pistons connecting rods and valves. The images include fire engines supplied to the Morristown NJ Basking Ridge NJ Winsted CT Orenda Hose Co. Griffith IN East Greenwich NJ Mt. Carmel PA Loch Sheldrake NY and many others. Also used by the Childs’ Co. customers were such manufacturers as Dodge-Graham Ford pleasure chassis Packard Model EX White 20-45 Chassis a Ward-La France and many more. Orlando J. Childs organized the O.J. Childs Co. Fire Apparatus in 1899 to take over the business of the Utica Fire Extinguisher Co. who were best known for their chemical fire extinguishers designed and patented originally in 1896-97 by William Pomfret and Thomas Keating. They quickly began actively selling fire extinguishers to businesses individuals and even specialized on fire extinguishers for early automobile enthusiasts during the Brass Era who suffered frequent engine fires. After producing their first Triple Combination Pump Wagon about 1910 they quick espanced into ready-made chemical tank truck fire-engines for rural fire departments. Wallace Childs acquired the Foamite Firefoam Co. in New York in 1922 and in 1926 the entire company was acquired and became a subsidiary of American-La France Fire Engine Co. ‎[OTTOMAN NAVAL FORCES COMMISSION OF ENGINES].‎

‎OTTOMAN NAVAL FORCES / PAMPHLET FOR THE LIQUID FUEL Yag-i mâyi' mahrûkâti ve tertîbâti. i.e. Liquid oil fuel and its assembly. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Bahriye Nezâreti Çarhçi sic. Çarkçi Komisyonu.‎

‎Istanbul: Matbaa-yi Bahriyye. AH 1328 1912. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Paperback in original wrappers. Demy 8vo. 21 x 14 cm. In Ottoman script Turkish with Arabic letters. 16 p. Rear cover is missing. This pamphlet mostly prepared in the form of questions and answers describes the technical infrastructure required for the use of liquid oil fuel in warships. It was prepared for officers studying at the navy schools of the Imperial Ottoman in the early 20th century. On the cover it's indicated to be translated by the Ottoman Naval Forces Commission of Engines but no information on which source to be used to translate it. It's printed after the Second Constitutional Regime in 1908 and Tripoli War in 1911 probably during the Balkan Wars 1912-1913. Following the Young Turk Revolution in 1908 the Committee of Union and Progress which effectively took control of the country sought to develop a strong Ottoman naval force. The poor condition of the fleet became evident during the Ottoman Naval Parade of 1910 and the Ottoman Navy Foundation was established in order to purchase new ships through public donations. Those who made donations received different types of medals according to the size of their contributions. In 1910 the Ottoman Navy purchased two pre-dreadnought battleships from Germany: SMS Weissenburg and her sister ship SMS Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm. These ships were renamed Turgut Reis and Barbaros Hayreddin respectively. The Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912 and the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 proved disastrous for the Ottoman Empire. In the former the Italians occupied Ottoman Tripolitania present-day Libya and the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea and the Regia Marina defeated Ottoman light naval forces in the battles of Preveza Beirut and Kunfuda Bay. In the latter a smaller Greek fleet successfully engaged with Ottoman battleships in the naval skirmishes of Elli and Lemnos. The better condition of the Greek fleet in the Aegean Sea during the Balkan Wars led to the liberation of all Ottoman-held Aegean islands other than those in the Italian-occupied Dodecanese. It also prevented Ottoman reinforcements and supplies to the land battles on the Balkan peninsula where the Balkan League emerged victoriously. The only Ottoman naval successes during the Balkan Wars were the raiding actions of the light cruiser Hamidiye under the command of Rauf Orbay. For this reason the Naval Ministry on the one hand tried to train a large number of sailor officers by printing technical booklets like this in order to close the gap. Faded on the cover chipped on extremities and spine. Otherwise a good and rare copy. Not in Özege.; Only one copy in OCLC: 949520567 Bogaziçi Uni. ‎Test of a Parsons steam turbine: thesis presented for graduation. . . typescript manuscript.‎

‎Ithaca NY: Cornell University Ehrhart M.E E.E. & Cardullo M.E. E. June 1901. 4to. 3 28 typed leaves; 43 leaves of plates including 7 tipped-in silver gelatin photographs sized from 3 x 4 in. up to 4.5 x 7.5 in. tables on blue-printed graph paper charts diagrams. This manuscript thesis details the testing and evaluation of the newly developed Parsons Steam Turbine which was invented by Sir Charles Parsons in 1884 and revolutionized engineering across many fields in the Victorian era. His turbine extracted thermal engineering from pressurized steam allowing a rotating output shaft especially suited for driving electrical generators. In 1897 just four years before this work was researched and published the Parsons engine was applied to the ship Turbinia the first ship powered by the very successful enginer. Ehrhart 1874-1941 & Cardullo 1879-1938 were both electrical engineering students at Cornell University. After graudation Ehrhart became an electrical engineer with expertise in turbines for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh and by the end of World War I Ehrhart was a manager of the Elliott Electrical Engineering Company in Edgewood PA nice suburb of Pittsburgh. Cardullo became a professor of mechanical engineering wrote on thermodynamics and later worked as the chief draftsman of the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Co. before becoming the head of engineering testing for the Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Co. in Buffalo NY.
