Mechanics' Institutes were and still are educational establishments originally formed to provide adult education particularly in technical subjects to working men. The first Mechanics' Institute in England was opened at Liverpool in July 1823. The London Mechanics' Institute later Birkbeck College followed in November 1823. George Birkbeck had first instituted free lectures on arts science and technical subjects in 1800. This mechanics' class continued to meet after he moved to London in 1804 and in 1823 the organisation was formalised by incorporating itself as the Mechanics' Institute. Its promoters included Francis Place Henry Brougham Jeremy Bentham and J.C. Hobhouse. [London: s.n. 1823?] unknown

Prima edizione del lavoro fondamentale del fisico e pensatore ceco: la prospettiva di Mach sulla fisica e la meccanica avrebbe influenzato profondamente la circostanza scientifica corrente e successiva, fino ad Albert Einstein che, a proposito del contenuto di questo volume, avrebbe scritto nel 1916, che era senza meno “the common property of physicists”; sempre in questo volume è formulato quello che Einstein avrebbe battezzato in suo onore “il principio di Mach”, sulle proprietà inerziali di un corpo e la loro interazione con la “materia lontana”. Il nome di Ernst Mach è legato fra l’altro all’unità di misura a lui intitolata, ovvero il numero di Mach, che esprime in unità la velocità supersonica. First edition of the main work of Mach: his perspective on physics and mechanics had a deep influence on the scientific circumstance, included Einstein, that about the content of this very volume wrote that it was “the common property of physicist”. Also in this volume the author develops the principle that Einstein called “of Mach”, about interaction of inertial properties with the “far matter”.
