"Einstein returned from Prague to Zurich in the summer of 1912. He had by then already formulated the fundamental physical principles of the general relativity theory of gravitation and was now searching for their mathematical structure. At the E.T.H. the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich where he now returned as professor of theoretical physics Einstein met again his old fiend and former fellow student Marcel Grossmann who was now a professor of mathematics and his colleague. With Grossmann and under his guidance Einstein studied the mathematical literature especially the theory of invariants and the absolute differential calculus of Chirstoffel Ricci Levi-Civita and others. Einstein developed the mathematical structure of his theory jointly with Grossmann and in his celebrated paper on the general theory of relativity in 1916 he acknowledged the help which his friend had given him. It was Grossmann's help which had Einstein said 'spared me not only the study of the relevant mathematical literature but who Grossmann also assisted me in searching for the field equations of gravitation.' This study of mathematical literature and the search for the proper mathematical tools led to several joint papers with Grossmann during Einstein's all too brief stay in Zurich. These papers contained the first attempts toward a generalized theory of relativity using new mathematical tools and gave full expression to Einstein's earlier physical insights" Jagdish The Golden Age of Theoretical Physics. The first of Einstein's papers to present his collaborative work with Grossmann the famous "Entwurf" paper appeared in the summer of 1913; the present paper based on a lecture given on September 9 1913 to the 96th annual meeting of the Swiss Society for Natural Sciences in Frauenfeld provides further details on the new generalized theory of relativity. As he later explained: "Among the tasks that life as a photographer had set me a portrait of Albert Einstein had always seemed a 'must' - not only because this greatest refugee of our century has been accounted by all the world as the most outstanding scientist since Newton but because his face in all its rough grandeur invited and challenged the camera." FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF EINSTEIN'S REVIEW OF WEYL'S SEMINAL WORK RAUM-ZEIT-MATERIE SPACE-TIME-MATTERS -- WEYL'S STUDY OF THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY written after spending a year with Einstein as the latter was working out the details of his theory. Weyl's work is still considered "the standard treatise on the general theory of relativity" Nature. In the very favorable review offered here Einstein writes "every page shows the amazingly steady hand of the master who has penetrated the subject matter from the most diverse angles. Weyl understood how to combine mathematical rigor with graphic intuition" Einstein 373. Weyl's work includes "an exposition and examination of Einstein's general theory of relativity and the concomitant theory of gravitation. A detailed investigation follows devoted to gravitational waves a rigorous solution of the problem of one body laws of conservation and the energy of gravitation" Stanford Dictionary of Philosophy. The Dictionary of Scientific Biography notes that Weyl's work played "an important role in the development of mathematical physics" DSB XIV p. 281. Hermann Klaus Hugo Weyl 1885-1955 was a German mathematician theoretical physicist and philosopher. In 1913 Weyl took a teaching post at the ETH Zurich where he was a colleague of Einstein's just as the latter was working out the details of the theory of general relativity. 1943. The Red Army 25th Anniversary dinner was held at the Hotel Commodore New York City 22 February 1943 under the auspices of the magazine Soviet Russia Today. Albert Einstein Thomas Mann and Edgar Lee Masters agree to sponsor the dinner. This collection contains 8 items in total dated all 1943 specifically 3 Typed carbon letters 3 telegrams 1 B&w photo and 1 magazine. Content details; • 3 Typed letters carbon copies each letter is chipped and torn at the perimeter but the text is not affected to each of these three individuals from the Jessica Smith the editor of Soviet Russia Today 114 E. 32nd Street New York N.Y. 29 March 1943 • 3 Telegrams two 8.5" × 3.5" one 8" × 5.75" from Einstein Mann and Masters agreeing to be sponsors of the dinner. • Einstein's telegram is dated 16 January 1943: "SHALL BE GLAD TO SPONSOR RED ARMY ANNIVERSARY DINNER= ALBERT EINSTEIN." • Mann's telegram is dated 18 January 1943: "GIVING WITH PLEASURE MY NAME FOR LISTS OF SPONSORS OF YOUR DNNER= THOMAS MANN." • Masters's telegram is dated 17 January 1943: "YOU MAY USE MY NAME AS ONE OF THE SPONSORS FOR THE ANNIVERSARY MEETING ON FEB 22ND= EDGAR LEE MASTERS." • 1 B&w photo 9 × 7.25" "At Red Army Dinner" 22 February 1943 N.E.A. The Workers' and Peasants' Red Army shortened to the Red Army was the army and air force of the Soviet Union. Smith writes: "We are very grateful to you for accepting our invitation to be a sponsor of our dinner in honor of the Red Army. We are issuing a special Red Army number of Soviet Russia Today which we expect to have ready in time for the dinner. We are requesting tributes to the Red Army by prominent Americans for publication in this issue. We should like very much to have a tribute from you both for publication in the magazine and for inclusion in a reading of tributes that will be a part of the dinner program. Albert Einstein 1879-1955 was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity one of the two pillars of modern physics. His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. Paul Thomas Mann 1875-1955 was a German novelist short story writer social critic philanthropist essayist and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Edgar Lee Masters 1868-1950 was an American attorney poet biographer and dramatist.
