EINSTEIN Albert.
Signed photograph.
1932. Signed by Einstein for a fellow advocate of a universal language Original photographic print 121 x 70 mm; image size 75 x 55 mm. Stock number printed on verso "1016". Signed by Einstein in ink below the image "Albert Einstein 1932". The photograph showing Einstein in a pale pinstriped suit wing collar and plain necktie was taken at a press conference on the occasion of Einstein's first visit to Caltech in Pasadena on 2 January 1931. Einstein wintered at Caltech in 1931 1932 and 1933. Provenance: from the collection of Leonard Nowell Mansell Newell pseud. Eleno Vinfero 1902-1968. Newell was an English Esperantist teaching the language and editing various periodicals. He also wrote poetry strongly influenced by the Budapest School of writers. He spent the second half of his life in Australia. It is not recorded how Newell obtained the signed photo but it may be significant that in late July 1932 the year of the inscription Newell was secretary general of the 24th World Esperanto Congress in Paris. Einstein an ardent anti-nationalist and supporter of international co-operation took a favourable view of Esperanto the auxiliary language created in the 1870s and 1880s by L. L. Zamenhof a Jew from Bialystok whose linguistic invention was viewed with great suspicion by Hitler and the Nazis. "For international communication use of an international language is not only necessary" Einstein wrote "it is the obvious solution. Esperanto is the best solution for an international language." On 30 July 1932 Einstein was back in Germany in Caputh near Potsdam beginning at the suggestion of the League of Nations and its International Institute of Intellectual Co-operation at Paris his correspondence with Sigmund Freud published later that year as Why War 1932. unknown

Born Max Albert Einstein
Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
London: Methuen & Company 1924. First edition of this classic account of Born's analysis and interpretation of Einstein's theory of relativity. Octavo original cloth frontispiece of Einstein. Signed by Max Born on the verso of the frontispiece. Translated by Henry L. Brose. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. First editions are uncommon signed examples rare. Einstein's Theory of Relativity is a book in which one great mind explains the work of another great mind in terms comprehensible to the layman is a significant achievement. This is such a book. Max Born was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954 and was one of the world's great physicists: in this work he analyzes and interprets the theory of Einsteinian relativity. The result is undoubtedly the most lucid and insightful of all the books that have been written to explain the revolutionary theory that marked the end of the classical and the beginning of the modern era of physics. Born follows a quasi-historical method of presentation. The book begins with a review of the classical physics covering such topics as origins of space and time measurements geometric axioms Ptolemaic and Copernican astronomy concepts of equilibrium and force laws of motion inertia mass momentum and energy Newtonian world system absolute space and absolute time gravitation celestial mechanics centrifugal forces and absolute space laws of optics the corpuscular and undulatory theories speed of light wave theory Doppler effect convection of light by matter electrodynamics including magnetic induction electromagnetic theory of light electromagnetic ether electromagnetic laws of moving bodies electromagnetic mass and the contraction hypothesis. Born then takes up his exposition of Einstein's special and general theories of relativity discussing the concept of simultaneity kinematics Einstein's mechanics and dynamics relativity of arbitrary motions the principle of equivalence the geometry of curved surfaces and the space-time continuum among other topics. Born then points out some predictions of the theory of relativity and its implications for cosmology and indicates what is being sought in the unified field theory. This work steers a middle course between vague popularizations and complex scientific presentations. This is a careful discussion of principles stated in thoroughly acceptable scientific form yet in a manner that makes it possible for the reader who has no scientific training to understand it. Only high school algebra has been used in explaining the nature of classical physics and relativity and simple experiments and diagrams are used to illustrate each step. The layman and the beginning student in physics will find this an immensely valuable and usable introduction to relativity. Methuen & Company hardcover

EINSTEIN Albert.
A fine collection of eleven offprints including two distinguished as some of his major works: Zur affinen Feldtheorie and Einheitliche Theorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität.
Berlin: Verlag der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Kommission bei Walter de Gruyter u. Co. 1921-31. Some of Einstein's most celebrated lectures and papers in the original offprint format 11 offprints tall quartos 10 of which 256 x 183 mm one 268 x 189 mm between 6 and 20 pp. Original orange printed wrappers. Fine copies a few with some faint creasing to wrappers. First separate editions rare comprising eleven of Einstein's papers written for the Prussian Academy of Sciences journal Sitzungsberichte including two distinguished as some of his major works—Zur affinen Feldtheorie 1923 and Einheitliche Theorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität 1931 both asterisked in Weil and included in the Norman Library—three co-authored with his assistant Walther Mayer and another Geometrie und Erfahrung 1921 considered one of his most celebrated lectures. The remaining offprints concern various aspects of Einstein's attempts to achieve a unified field theory that would combine the separate gravitational and electromagnetic field theories the first of which he himself had created. First issued as part of the Academy's journal these offprints would have been printed in relatively small numbers from the same type setting but often with new pagination. Most but not all would have been given to Einstein for presentation to colleagues hence their scarcity. Einheitliche Theorie von Gravitation und Elektrizität is the first paper to present Einstein's original approach to unified field theory and the first to use the term "unified field theory" in its title. Though he had written several papers on this subject previously these were predominately reactions or critiques to the ideas of others such as his 1927 note on Theodor Kaluza also present in this collection. The American philosopher of science Michael Friedman called Einstein's aforementioned 1921 paper on Geometry and Experience "a landmark in the philosophy of geometry" a particularly beautiful lecture which "provided a very clear and sharp version of the distinction between 'pure' and 'applied'—mathematical and physical—geometry that soon became canonical in 20th-century scientific thought" p. 193. It contains Einstein's famous answer to the question of why mathematics should be so well adapted to describing the external world: "In so far as the Laws of Mathematics refer to the external world they are not certain; and in so far as they are certain they do not refer to reality". At the recommendation of Max Planck and Walther Nernst in November 1913 Einstein became at the age of 34 the youngest member of the Academy. His yearly salary of 12000 marks plus the stipulation that he have no teaching requirements allowed him to concentrate almost entirely on his research. He presented his field equations of general relativity in a four-part speech to the Academy on 25 November 1915 and continued to give occasional lectures until his resignation in April 1933 part of his opposition to German institutions in implicit support of Hitler's regime. Mayer had become his assistant in 1929 whom Einstein insisted be also appointed to Princeton when he was given a professorship at the Institute of Advanced Studies there in 1932. Weil 114; 120; 132; 131; 156; 161; 169; 170; 180; 179; 182. Norman Library of Science and Medicine 698 for Zur affinen Feldtheorie; 701 for Einstein and Mayer's Einheitliche Theorie…Part I. See Michael Friedman "Geometry as a Branch of Physics: Background and Context for Einstein's 'Geometry and Experience'" in Reading Natural Philosophy: Essays in the History and Philosophy of Science and Mathematics 2002. Einstein Albert; Lionel S. Reiss
Albert Einstein Signed Etching.
1921. Etched portrait of Albert Einstein by well-known Polish-American Jewish artist Lionel S. Reiss. Signed by both Einstein and Reiss. In fine condition. Double matted and framed the entire piece measures 13.5 inches by 16.5 inches. An exceptional piece. Polish-American Jewish painter Lionel S. Reiss immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1898 at the age of four joining the ranks of other Eastern European Jews fleeing their native countries at the start of the 20th century. His family settled in New York's Lower East Side where Reiss would ultimately spend the majority of his life and become an established portraitist particularly known for his intimate portraits of Jewish people. In 1938 Reiss published his book My Models Were Jews in which he argued against the idea of a singular "Jewish Ethnicity" and that the Jewish people were rather a cultural group composed of a number of significantly diverse communities. unknown
