TYPEWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT OF 'DERBY DAY AND OTHER ADVENTURES' SIGNED IN INK
Oak Knoll PA: self published 1934. loose sheets. 4to. loose sheets. 30 pages. This manuscript is compiled of the first thirty 30 pages of A. Edward Newton's Derby Day. Autograph inscription by Newton on the first page: "Send to John Eckel. -A. Edward Newton".

Derby Day and Other Adventures was a collection of 16 essays on such subjects as 'Adventures in London' 'A Book-Collector Goes to the Dogs' 'The Bronte Country' etc. It was a commercial success and featured chapters of anecdotes on historical subjects world cities and events of which the author had knowledge on or was present at including horse racing political conversations and current events of the day.

Provenance: The library of John C. Eckel Philadelphia Pennsylvania. To Be Dispersed at Public Sale January 15 and 16. By His Order. American Art Association. Anderson Galleries Inc. 30 East Fifty-Seventh Street New York. 1935. In this auction lots 307 to 362 listed Eckel's Newton collection this was lot 359. Both Mr. Newton and Mr. Eckel were great friends. Eckel was a bibliographer of Charles Dickens

Alfred Edward Newton was an American author publisher and avid book collector. He is best known for his book Amenities of Book Collecting 1918 which sold over 25000 copies. At the time of his death it was estimated that he had approximately 10000 books in his collection focusing on English and American literary works the major part of which were auctioned by Parke-Bernet Galleries New York in April May and October 1941. Highlights of the sale included the autograph manuscripts of Thomas Hardy's novel Far From the Madding Crowd and Charles Lamb's essay Dream Children. However the fall in rare book prices steadily through the Great Depression meant that many sold lots brought only a fraction of prices they would have realized at the time of the Jerome Kern sale in 1929. The three volume Newton sale catalogue remains a useful reference for literature collectors. self published unknown
