Small 4to approximately 235 x 170 mm 9¼ x 6¾ inches in three parts each with a separate title page and each with a different engraved pictorial dedication leaf addressed to the Royal Society that to Part II being double page portrait of Scheuchzer opposite general title page engraved by Jos. Nutting after Melchior Fusslinus plus 41 plates including 2 folding plate VII in the second journey has a small circle hand coloured blue depicting the earth in the middle of mists and clouds as called for pages: 6 57 1; 272; 2 22 2 - blank bound in full modern panelled calf blind stamped decoration to covers richly gilt spine raised bands and gilt lettered morocco label red speckled edges and new endpapers. Plate 1 in the third part has top margin trimmed not affecting image blank side of first portrait has pale age-browning and is slightly dusty and last plate has some light foxing to blank side blank sides of most plates slightly dusty 1 plate has paper fault to lower margin neatly repaired no loss occasional very slight light browning small loss from upper corner of 1 text page not affecting page number or text. A very good clean tight copy of the first edition complete with all 44 plates and the portrait. Johann Jacob Scheuchzer 1672-1733 was a Swiss scholar a mathematician and naturalist and a doctor of medicine. He was a correspondent and friend of Isaac Newton and a Fellow of the Royal Society to whom at Newton's suggestion this work was dedicated. Newton's imprimatur appears on the title page and the engraved plates were executed at the expense of Newton whose name appears on the 3 engraved dedication plates and other Royal Society members such as Hans Sloane and Edmund Halley plus other prominent university men. Scheuchzer was one of greatest Alpine tourists of his day and in this work describes his observations during three journeys made in 1702 1703 and 1704. The three dedication plates and many others show views from his journeys including geological formations others depict botanical and geological specimens and equipment. See: Grace K. Young Newton was the son of farmer Levi Newton and his childhood was marred by poverty and the premature death of his mother Persis. According to the 1880 census he had been boarded out as a servant in the household of Benjamin and Nellie Manly and David and Sadie Aiken Benjamin's uncle and aunt. The Manlys' autographs appear in the book along with Newton's aunt: "Dear Marshall 'Prove all things hold fast that which is good.' Loveling sic your Aunt. Hattie Hiscock. Newfane VT. Remember the visit to dear Mother's grave." The last census to mention Newton appears in 1930 in Shrewsbury MA where he resided as a widowed locomotive engineer.
