Newton was an archaeologist and vase scholar know for building major collections for the British Museum as Keeper of Department of Antiquities. Newton studied classical art from a scientific prospective and was one of the first to photograph archaeological sites and publish them. He also is known for discovering and excavating the remains of the mausoleum of Halicarnassus.
