Black Panthers Peace and Freedom Party Marco Savio Eldridge Cleaver Huey Newton Bobby Seale subjects
Collection of 5 original Black Panther / Peace and Freedom Party oversize bumper stickers
Berkeley: Berkley Graphics Arts 1968. Collection of five vintage bumper stickers from the 1968 political campaigns run via a collaboration between the Black Panthers and the Peace and Freedom Party.

Each of the stickers were made for various Peace and Freedom Party political campaigns including: Mario Savio for California state senator Black Panther founders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver for president and two stickers simply advertising the Peace and Freedom Party itself.

In 1968 the Black Panthers would move away from direct actions including their legendary confrontations with the Berkeley police department and briefly into the political sphere when they joined forces with the PFP a left-wing anti-war party advocating Black liberation women's liberation and LGBTQ rights. The campaigns were largely seen as political statements as Cleaver was a convicted felon and technically ineligible for the presidency due to his being under the age of 35 by the time of inauguration and as Newton and Seale were on trial at the time repeatedly being denied their civil liberties.

All items rare each with original peel-off paper backing and each between 4 x 13.5 an 4 x 15 inches. Near Fine and unused with light soil on two of the stickers and rubber stamp for the "Lancaster County Peace & Freedom Movement Organizing Committee" on the verso of one sticker. A few of these rear peel-off panels have come loose due to dryness but most are intact and the bumper stickers themselves are unaffected. Berkley Graphics Arts unknown books

NEWTON Earl L.
The Nixie Box
Kalamazoo: The Horton-Beimer Press 1927. First Edition. Octavo 18cm; dark blue cloth stamped in orange; 158pp. Boards soiled with mild rubbing light wear to extremities. Slight toning to interior margins but otherwise clean unmarked. Very Good or Better quite rare.

Judging by the chief concern of this self-published poetry book one can infer that Mr. Earl L. Newton must have worked for the U.S. Postal Service in some capacity at some point in his life. Indeed an 1899 issue of The Detroit Free Press notes that a man of that name was appointed to a local railroad post office clerk position. In any case a "nixie box" was what postal workers used to store undeliverable mail and Newton's book contains a number of light-hearted verses on a range of topics but most with the good old "R.P.O" at its core. Valk Mrs. A. G. & Miss M. E. Newton compilers; Committee of St. Paul's Church Guild Washington DC. D. C.
The Way to a Man's Heart: A Cookery Book
Washington DC: Judd & Detweiler Printer 1890. Octavo 19.5 x 13.5 cm. 110 pages. Subtitle on cover and flyleaf: A Cook Book. "Index" page 17 is actually a table of contents. Advertisements on pages 1-14 and 95-110. First edition. Two hundred twenty ascribed recipes gathered in support of a beloved urban space where "The seats in the church are free at every service". The dishes bear echoes of a British and conservative culinary orientation: Clam Chowder English Rice Pudding Farcied i.e. stuffed Tomatoes Shrove Tuesday Pancakes Apple Roly-Poly Pickled Lemons Shrewsbury Cakes Soft Gingerbread Fig Pudding. Included is a Plum Pudding that made the rounds in post-Civil War cookbooks attributed to Mrs. General Sherman. Seldom is the immediate fund-raising goal of a church cookbook forthrightly stated but Mrs. Valk and Miss Newton left no doubt: "The ladies who have compiled this little volume hope that it may accomplish the double mission of helping to conserve domestic serenity and of pushing forward the good work to which its proceeds are to be devoted-the erection of St. Paul's Parish Building". The community now known as St. Paul's Parish at K Street was born of the missionary fervor that swept Washington in the aftermath of the Civil War. The first church was constructed in 1868 on 23rd Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and I Street NW not far from Washington Circle. No photographs of this first building appear to have survived. At once resolutely Anglo-Catholic and "free" - that is without reserved or rented pews - St. Paul's has since that time embraced an urban mission at the heart of the District. After the federal government seized the location by eminent domain in 1944 St. Paul's congregation built the church it now occupies on the south side of K Street. A number of pages spot- or splatter-stained a few with marks in pencil. Some soiling to edges of text block; textblock firm despite shaken covers. Bound in red publisher's cloth stained with black titling and blind-stamped decorative pattern; corners bumped. Good. Scarce. OCLC locates two copies; Cook page 49; no in Brown or Cagle.
