Die zudem wechselvollen Machtverhältnisse in Paris schlugen sich auch in teilweise konkurrierenden Strategien der Kulturpolitik für die Deutschen nieder. Die Autorin analysiert die Verhältnisse, nicht zuletzt an Hand bisher unveröffentlichter französischer Quellen. Dadurch werden nicht nur die organisatorischen Bedingungen durchschaubar, sondern auch deren konkrete Auswirkungen nachvollziehbar gemacht: in der Schul- und Hochschulreform, im französischen Sprachunterricht und nicht zuletzt in der Gründung einer erstaunlichen Vielzahl literarischer Zeitschriften. Die Untersuchung beschäftigt sich dabei äußerst intensiv mit den Inhalten von Unterricht, Schulbüchern und Zeitschriften, darunter exemplarisch mit denen von Die Quelle, Lancelot und Das Goldene Tor.
