La mano di Prometeo raccoglie sei saggi il cui tema centrale è costituito dalle arti del fuoco. Carbonai, ceramisti, fabbri ferrai sono, con le loro competenze e ambivalenze, i continuatori di una tradizione prometeica che l'Autore analizza in una regione a forte risonanza mitica come la Sicilia. Lo studio dei rapporti tra questi artigiani e il fuoco ha consentito di riflettere anche sullo «sviluppo senza progresso» che caratterizza la condizione attuale dell'uomo: una catastrofe antropologica il cui segno più emble matico può essere individuato nella «regressione della mano dal tornio». Il volume è corredato di 155 immagini. Salvatore D'Onofrio è professore associato di Antropologia culturale presso la Facoltà di Magistero dell'Università di Lecce. PREFAZIONE I Miti sull'origine del fuoco raccolti da Frazer (1930) riaffermano, in un'epoca già marcata dalle analisi di tipo sincronico dei funzionalisti, quei principi gerarchico-evolutivi che nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento avevano ispirato il costituirsi della scienza antropologica. Le diverse storie sull'origine del fuoco nella Grecia antica che hanno per protagonista Prometeo sono inserite tra i racconti, normanni e bretoni, del folklore europeo e gli inni vedici, alla fine di un giro iniziato dai «selvaggi più primitivi»: Tasmaniani, Australiani e indigeni delle isole dello stretto di Torres. Perfezionando il metodo inaugurato nel XVIII sec. dal Padre gesuita Joseph-François Lafitau nel suo Moeurs des sauvages américains comparées aux moeurs des premiers temps, la «piramide comparativa» di Frazer mette dunque a raffronto, in un ordine etno-geografico ideologicamente orientato: la cultura coeva di «uomini dallo spirito ancora infantile», le sopravvivenze di cui erano portatori i gruppi sociali subalterni dell'Occidente, la mitologia - che si pretendeva più nobile - delle cosiddette civiltà indoeuropee; sono questi i vertici di una base che in diverso modo si correlano all'apice rappresentato dalla moderna società borghese. L'edificio frazeriano è puntellato infine dall'idea che i miti meritino di essere studiati come documenti storici, che essi rappresentino - al pari dei fossili uno stadio ancora embrionale del pensiero umano, in grado di gettare una luce sull'evoluzione intellettuale della nostra specie. Meno rigide appaiono le conclusioni di Frazer. La comparazione lo induce ad elaborare un «sistema delle tre età» entro cui la materia mitica è diversamente organizzata.
