AS component units within a complex ancient and today newly important civilization Indian villages offer a challenging field for study of peasant culture and society. This is the first book to bring together authoritative studies of a number of Indian villages each examined in depth by up-to-date techniques. Proceeding from ideas suggested by Robert Redfield in his recent The Little Community the eight social anthropologists who made these studies attempt to evaluate methods of understanding such small communities as wholes. Based on extensive and expert field work the papers in this volume show how the Indian village tends to overflow the forms of thought that have been applied to it. In each of the villages described qualifying or opposing its integrity as a homogeneous and distinctive cultural unit there appear extra-village factors - pilgrimages to sacred shrines; cast and kin ties; economic political and administrative institutions; and proximity to towns highways and railroads.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. L'opera, che raccoglie le osservazioni fatte dall'autore in qualita' di medico del carcere giudiziario di Torino prima e di assistente al laboratorio di medicina legale poi, presenta un esame comparativo di un numero notevole di delinquenti portati a confronto con altre osservazioni fatte sui 'normali'.

Nel 1897 avrebbe pubblicato la prima edizione (gfià promessa dal 1894) del volume "La Pubertà studiata nell’uomo e nella donna, in rapporto all’antropologia, alla psichiatria, alla pedagogia ed alla sociologia", monografia completa, redatta con criterio tutto personale, di questo così fortunoso periodo della vita dell'uomo, opera mirabile.

Nel 1900 conseguì la laurea in medicina nell’Università di Torino e indirizzò la sua attività allo studio della psichiatria e dell’antropologia. Le figure del padre e del fratello Andrea, chirurgo di valore, ebbero una sostanziale influenza sulla sua formazione culturale. In particolare l’attività e gli studi del padre, medico condotto a Limone Piemonte, assistente di C. Lombroso e per trent’anni direttore del manicomio di Torino, influenzarono le scelte scientifico-culturali del M., dotato al tempo stesso di una vasta cultura umanistica e di una rigorosa e seria preparazione scientifica. a Torino fu proprio il M., a contribuire alla nascita dell’antropologia fisica quale noi oggi la intendiamo. A proposito del M., Fumagalli scrisse: «Concepì l’Antropologia come la Storia naturale dell’Uomo, sintesi di ogni disciplina naturalistica, e l’Uomo studiò, considerandone ogni manifestazione o recondita espressione, nell’anatomia e fisiologia, nell’osteologia, nell’etnografia, nell’archeologia, nella preistoria e nella storia, inquadrando ogni fenomeno biologico nell’ambiente naturale, quale originario promotore e orientatore». Gli studi del M. si iscrissero, dunque, in una nuova concezione dell’antropologia fisica, basata sia sull’utilizzo delle collezioni sia sullo studio della relazione tra l’uomo e il suo ambiente... Le misure cefaliche, ben diversamente da quanto era avvenuto in passato, non rappresentarono più meri elementi di classificazione, ma divennero anche buoni indicatori dei processi di adattamento. Il M. riteneva che, per ricostruire la storia biologica delle popolazioni, le informazioni non dovessero essere desunte solo dai crani, ma dallo scheletro tutto intero, il quale assunse così una propria importanza negli studi di paleobiologia. Se le sue pubblicazioni rappresentarono una insostituibile e talora unica documentazione degli scavi di Schiaparelli, le sue ricerche hanno costituito un innovativo punto di incontro tra discipline umanistiche e scientifiche e hanno contribuito alla nascita di un’antropologia egittologica con connotazione biologico-naturalistica. Il M. aveva anche tentato di valutare, sotto il profilo genetico, le differenze e la suddivisione geografica o temporale dei diversi gruppi etnici; se le problematiche da lui proposte presentano ancora alcuni caratteri di attualità e interesse, d’altra parte egli si trovò a operare in un contesto ideologico, legato a taluni presupposti devianti, che lo portò negli anni Quaranta a prese di posizione in campo scientifico e politico di stampo razzista.

In its recently published obituary The Times called Marshack "a protagonist in the constant arguments over the nature of our ancestry that have been one of the most productive areas of archaeological research in the past 40 years."
