Viaje al la Sierre Nevada de Santa Marta - Paisajes de la Naturaleza Tropical version Castalleana por J.J.
Cartagena 1935. Spanisg translation. Illustrated with plates printed in brown ink pp viii 208 a little used internally paperback covers slightly worn. On a mountainous area of Columbia. Professor Jack Hawkes' copy - though not signed - but with his pencilled notes on the rear endpaper and a very few notes in the margins. SCARCE. lise Reclus 1830 - 1905 also known as Jacques lise Reclus was a renowned French geographer writer and anarchist. He produced his 19-volume masterwork La Nouvelle Gographie universelle la terre et les hommes "Universal Geography" over a period of nearly 20 years . In 1892 he was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal of the Paris Geographical Society for this work despite his having been banished from France because of his political activism. According to Kirkpatrick Sale: "His geographical work thoroughly researched and unflinchingly scientific laid out a picture of human-nature interaction that we today would call bioregionalism. It showed with more detail than anyone but a dedicated geographer could possibly absorb how the ecology of a place determined the kinds of lives and livelihoods its denizens would have and thus how people could properly live in self-regarding and self-determined bioregions without the interference of large and centralized governments that always try to homogenize diverse geographical areas." . Paperback. Good. Paperback

Redfield Robert 1897 1958 and Alfonso Villas Rojas
Chan Kom: A Maya Village
x236 pages with plates figures tables and index. Royal octavo 9" x 6" bound in original publishers pictorial wrappers. Third abridged edition first published by Carnegie Institution of Washington1934. This book is an account of the basic folk culture as it manifests itself in one particular village in eastern Yucatan. Though that village is composed of persons of Maya blood and speech and in this sense justifies the sub-title of this report their culture can not be called strictly speaking Indian any more than it can be called Spanish. Many of the customs described in these pages could be as well or better reported from towns on the railroad or even from neighborhoods in the city. In Yucatan culture elements of European derivation have penetrated to the uttermost forest hinterland while Indian practices and ceremonies are carried on by the people who dwell in the capital. Nevertheless taken as a whole the culture of the village is notably different from that of the city. It is the folk culture and the village community that constitute the larger problem to which this first report is a contribution. For the larger problem as so defined the distinction between culture elements of Indian origin and from origins from Spain is not important and the matter is not discussed in these pages. Condition: Light edge wear else a very good copy. University of Chicago Press paperback

Akhenaten: The Heretic King
Princeton New Jersey: Princeton University 1987. 7.5" wide by 10" tall. Bright clean tight square unmarked copy. Flat spine. No spine crease. No remainder mark. No store stamp owner's name or bookplate. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with drawings maps and photos. From the rear cover: "Here is a striking portrait of Akhenaten monotheistic worshiper of the sun and best-known Egyptian king next to Tutankhamen. Various writers have depicted this strange ruler of the fourteenth century B.C. as a disguised woman or a eunuch a mentor of Moses or a forerunner of Christ. Drawing on a vast amount of new evidence from his own excavations the Director of the Akhenaten Temple Project describes the kingly heretic against the background of imperial Egypt." According to W. Lee Humphreys: "Redford has produced a remarkable book one that engages both scholar and general reader. he introduces the reader to the heretic king to 18th Dynasty Egypt and to history at its best." . 1st printing of First Softcover Edition.
