Dobyns most radical suggestions is that demographic and consequent cultural changes were initiated throughout extensive areas of the nNew World early in the 16th century by a panhemispheric small pox epidemic with mortality rates around 75%. Documentary evidence supports the spread of this epidemic through Mesoamerica the Incan empire and the Southwestern United States in the years 1520 to 1524. Dobyns suggests it spread across the present United States however elsewhere he qualifies the distribution as "all of the most densely populated portions of the Americas."  The issue of whether this epidemic swept throughout the western North America inhabited by hunters and gatherers with relatively low density populations is deliberately left open. Regardless of whether or not this particular epidemic reached the Columbia Plateau Dobyns' general argument - that disease was the earliest of the Old World introductions and also one of the most important agents of cultural change - should hold for the region.
