Blumenbach Johann Friedrich; Marino M. (cur.)
Contributi alla storia naturale
br.

BOAS FRANZ. ESTABLISHING ACADEMIC ANTHROPOLOGY
The Mind of Primitive Man.
New York Macmillan 1911. 8vo. In the original full green cloth with title in gilt lettering to spine and front board. Light wear to extremities and a few leaves with traces after top corner having been bend otherwise a very fine and clean copy. X 2 294 pp. 5 pp of advertisement. First printing of Boas' landmark work in which he "established academic anthropology". The book was immensely influential not only in establishing anthropoly as an academic discipline and in academia in general it was also a dominant factor in the public opinion since it challenged the widely held racist and eugenic claims about race and intelligence and particularly white supremacy. <br>Boas concludes the book with an examination of racism in the United States. He expresses his hope that anthropology can lead to more tolerance and sympathy for different civilizations since "all races have contributed in the past to cultural progress in one way or another" From the present work a goal he to a large extend succeded with: It is a work "which have changed men's mind". Lewis The Passion of Franz Boas American Anthlropologist 2001.<br><br>"Shortly after the turn of the twentieth century at a time when the dominant attitudes regarding primitives and anthropology in general were still of racial and social evolutionism Franz Boas wrote The Mind of Primitive Man. He stated there that "The judgment of the mental states of a people is generally guided by the difference between its social status and our own and the greater the difference between their intellectual emotional and moral processes and those which are found in our civilization the harsher our judgment." Thus began a new current among modern ethnologists antiquarians historians of culture and anthropologists with regards to primitives. The ex fonte thought of Boas affected the succeeding generations of scholars and within three decades had revolutionized the attitudes toward primitive culture and mentality." Quinn The Only Tradition p. 170.<br><br>"When Boas began his work in America evolutionism was the dominant even "hegemonic" paradigm in anthropology sociology and political economy. Intellectuals of the political left were as invested in evolutionism as were those on the right. In addition to evolutionism racial determinism and social Darwinism were also in the ascendance and these touched the emotions and socioeconomic interests of American and European elites even more. . <br>Boas's attack on evolutionism in addition to its theoretical and technical aspects involved an attempt to establish the common humanity of "Primitive Man" in scientific and popular discourse; to remove the supposed gap between "our" minds and "theirs" and to question the assumption that "our" culture is special exalted better than other." .<br>Beginning in 1894 Boas began to directly confront the question of the differences between "primitive man" and "civilized man" and racial differences and racial prejudices in a series of papers that eventuated in his 1911 book the present. The main argument was: "There is no fundamental difference in the way of thinking of primitive and civilized man. A close connection between race and personality has never been established. He concludes the book with a plea for greater tolerance of other "forms of civilization" and sympathy for "foreign races" so that "as all races have contributed in past to cultural progress in one way or another so they will be capable of advancing the interests of mankind if we are only willing to give them a fair opportunity". The book was very influential and widely read one of those books "which have changed men's mind" Bunzel 1962 basic for all who wanted to believe in the equality and common humanity of all peoples." The Religion of the Kwakiutl Indians
2 Volumes. xvii284 pages with addenda; one plate. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Contributions to Anthropology Volume X parts 1 and 2. First editions.<br /><br />The beings that make up Kwakiutl mythology are remarkably diverse. Accounts of their interactions with humans and each other are passed along through stories that not only form the basis of traditional Kwakiutl spiritual and ceremonial life and lore but also connect Kwakiutl families to their ancestral pasts. Broadly speaking Kwakiutl mythology divides the world into several realms: the mortal world the sky world the land beneath the sea and the ghost world. In reality however it is difficult to discuss Kwakiutl mythology uniformly owing to the diverse accounts found among the many bands that constitute the Kwakiutl First Nations though some underlying commonalities exist. Kwakiutl creation stories exhibit tremendous variation but all hold that the original people appeared a very long time ago and presume the Earth to have already been in existence at that time. Some creation myths known as transformation stories tell of ancient ancestors traveling the world transforming nature or themselves into new beings some taking off their animal masks to reveal their human selves. These ancestors imparted their animal masks as crests for their numaym lineages thus identifying some numaym with specific animals such as the killer whale wolf bear or raven. Some of these characters use their ability to transform to play tricks or to escape the consequences of their actions. Still other tales recount ancient ancestors' encounters with supernatural visitors angry spirits and elemental forces.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some light edge wear else a better than very good set. CRUSADER ARCHAEOLOGY The Material Culture of the Latin East
Book has light bumping to corners and spine ends. Otherwise in Near Fine condition . ; One of the most fascinating and intriguing aspects of historical research is the study of how invading societies adapt to a strange environment, undergoing change themselves as well as influencing their new neighbours and surroundings. From the end of the eleventh century there were Christian states in the Levant which were hybrid societies resulting from the meeting of the very different cultures of the East and West. Although a wealth of literature has been written on the Crusading movement affording a clearer picture of what the Crusades entailed, little has been written to illuminate Franish life in “the lands beyond the sea. ” Crusader Archeology draws together recently excavated material from Israel, Cyprus, Syria and Jordan to examine what life was life for the Crusaders in their new territory, and how they were influenced by the local population. Chapters encompass Frankish urban and rural settlements, including agriculture, industry, the differing architecture employed by the military, the church, public and private structures, arts and crafts, leisure pursuits, death and burial customs, and building techniques. This highly illustrated volume comprises a graphic portrayal of the period and makes fascinating reading for all those interested in the Middle Ages, and particularly in the Crusaders. ; 0.98 x 9.5 x 6.47 Inches; 267 pages

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MUMMIES
Facts on File. Very Good. 1998. Softcover. 0816031088 . Ex-library book but still in excellent condition - spine sticker could be removed and a few internal ex-lib markings. Pages clean and tight. Cover has light scuffing and a little bumping of spine ends. No jacket as issued. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 256 pages; The Encyclopedia of Mummies covers all aspects of this interesting and fascinating topic. By defining the term in its broadest sense to include both those mummies created by natural means and those formed by artificial means author Brier has produced a volume to meet a growing interest. Entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from one paragraph to several columns though the average length is approximately 350 words. The encyclopedia includes information on mummies from around the world from ancient and medieval times to the modern day. Readers may be surprised to learn that Lenin and Eva Peron are considered mummies as is naval hero John Paul Jones. In addition to historical figures Brier includes mummies from both film and literature. Abbott and Costello and the Three Stooges all have had mummy encounters though Boris Karloff remains perhaps the most famous interpreter of the horror-movie mummy. There are definitions and descriptions of the artificial mummification process as well as those conditions that cause the natural mummification of corpses. Ethical issues surrounding the display of mummies are discussed in the entry ethics and mummies. Black-and-white illustrations enhance the text. Two appendixes a list of mummy films and a list of collections divided into Egyptian and non-Egyptian mummies follow the entries. The extensive bibliography of more than 1000 items includes both English-and non-English-language books and articles sorted geographically and for some areas by topic such as mummification process and children's books. 657 .
