‎lle hier versammelten Beiträge weisen auf die Grenzen hin, die der Realisierung kommunistischer Politik gesetzt waren - durch nationale und lokale Traditionen, ökonomische Tatsachen sowie die Notwendigkeit, den sozialen Frieden aufrecht zu erhalten. Das Maß, in dem sich gesellschaftliche Interessen in der politischen Praxis Geltung verschaffen konnte, divergiert allerdings zwischen den einzelnen untersuchten Ländern und Lebensbereichen. Somit lädt der Sammelband einerseits zu einem Vergleich staatssozialistischer Gesellschaften unter sozialgeschichtlicher Perspektive, andererseits zur Diskussion der Spielräume innerhalb dieser Systeme ein. Untersuchungsfelder sind: das industrielle Milieu, die geplanten "Musterstädte" des Sozialismus sowie die Repression und Verfolgung verschiedener sozialer Großgruppen.
