Quale antropologo, ma anche sociologo, storico ha restituito la società russa o centro e sudamericana, di un preciso tempo, come Gògol e Tolstoj, Carpentier e García Márquez? Nel generale dissenso ho spesso affermato che gli uomini non producono e consumano cose ma simboli. È questo il segreto inarrivabile della loro specificità in quanto umani. Resta da capire che cosa è il simbolo» (A. Buttitta). Sono raccolti in questo libro (l'ultimo del grande antropologo ideato insieme al figlio Emanuele) gli scritti di Antonino Buttitta sul tema che maggiormente lo ha appassionato e interpellato negli ultimi anni: il rapporto tra antropologia e letteratura, ovvero come gli umani raccontano di sé, ovvero come provano a vincere la morte.
