‎br. L'identità di un vivente coincide con l'informazione che esso possiede: con la sua quantità, e soprattutto con il suo livello di organizzazione. L'informazione non cognitiva corrisponde al livello biologico, esaminato nei capitoli sul codice genetico, sul sistema nervoso centrale e sul sistema immunitario. Mentre l'informazione cognitiva è quella cosciente che presuppone uno psichismo evoluto, e che si manifesta con i modi della cultura. Al contempo, l'identità non è un assetto statico, ma essenzialmente in divenire. In quest'ottica, s'intreccia continuamente con l'evoluzione. La Preistoria è l'età della transizione fra i livelli precognitivo e cognitivo. La periodica estinzione sia di specie viventi in generale, che di etnie antropologiche in particolare, comporta la perdita di interi patrimoni genetici, e poi culturali, e viene rappresentata come il massimo danno. Nel Neolitico il pensiero concreto, utile per la sopravvivenza immediata e per il confronto con l'ambiente, viene integrato dal pensiero astratto: la nuova cornice cognitiva dell'identità degli uomini. I codici dell'informazione biologica sono confrontati con i sistemi del linguaggio, e poi della scrittura e della numerazione; fino ai più moderni strumenti di conoscenza. Viene infine proposto un paragone fra il senso delle esperienze filosofica, estetica ed etica, intesi come il fondamento del vissuto identitario, che è proprio sia della persona che delle collettività.‎
