Hopfinger, Maryla:
Literature and Media: After 1989. Cross-Roads, Polish Studies in Culture, Literary Theory, and History (23). Translated by Andrzej Wojtasik.
Wie neu / As new. - This book discusses the direction of changes in contemporary culture at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries in Poland on the example of mutual relationships between literature and the media, such as film, radio, TV and the Internet. The interdisciplinary approach adopted by the author combines literary and media studies with the perspectives of social communication, anthropology and sociology of culture. I’he book focuses on topics such as reconfiguration of culture, expansion of the media, situation of literature and the central place of audio-visual parallels (auteur film. TV series, PC games). The author notes that both literature and the media are situated between art and communication today and both share the meta-cultural role of natural languages. ISBN 9783631800553

Graesse III 370. Winsor I 369-70 First edition.

One of the principal works in the celebrated literary dispute over the origins of the American aborigines. The controversy began in 1642 when Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius published his De Origine Gentium Americanorum in which he postulated that all of North America except for Yucatan was inhabited by the descendants of pre-Columbian Scandinavian colonists that the Peruvians were from China and that the regions south of Peru were peopled by the Moluccans. His theory aroused an antagonist in Joannes de Laet who counter-posed that the Scythian race furnished the predominant population of America. Horn better known by his Latinized name Hornius entered the debate at the suggestion of De Laet whose view he supported but he also held to later additions from the Phoenicians and Carthaginians on the Atlantic side and from the Chinese on the Pacific. Horsford, Eben Norton (editor); David Zeisberger
Zeisberger's Indian Dictionary English German Iroquois - The Onondaga; and Algonquin - The Delaware Printed from the Original Manuscript in Harvard College Library
Cambridge Massachusetts: John Wilson and Son University Press 1887. Large-Paper Copy. 8.5" wide by 10.75" tall. Very Good condition overall. Fine condition internally. A square tight copy with perfectly sound inner hinges. The book is bound in the original pebble-grain reddish-brown cloth. Gilt stamping on the spine is still bright. The front cover has a shallow groove or indentation not too obtrusive -- 1/8th inch wide 4.5 inches long cloth is not punctured. There is some light scattered foxing on the endpapers and on the edges of the text block. However all text pages are clean crisp and unmarked with NO foxing. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. NO owner's name or bookplate. This is the first appearance in print of David Zeisberger's dictionary of the Onondaga Iroquois and Delaware Algonquin languages. Previously it existed only as a manuscript in the Harvard College Library. The editor discovered it there and arranged publication. This is one of the copies as described by James Constantine Pilling which is "printed on larger and better paper." Pilling notes that the title page of these Large Paper copies omits two lines beginning "This edition has been published." just before the imprint. Pilling BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE ALGONQUIN LANGUAGES pp. 546-47. Hand Z5. Sabin 106301. For more on the life and works of David Zeisberger 1721-1808 see DAB Vol. 20 pp. 645-647; APPLETON'S CYCLOPAEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY Vol. VI p. 658; and Earl Olmstead's DAVID ZEISBERGER A LIFE AMONG THE INDIANS. He first came to America about 1739; began the study of the Indian languages in 1745
He traversed Massachusetts and Connecticut New York Pennsylvania and Ohio entered Michigan and Canada preaching to many nations in many tongues
Speaking the Delaware language fluently as well as the Mohawk and Onondaga dialects of the Iroquois; familiar with the Cayugas and other tongues; an adopted sachem of the Six Nations; naturalized among the Monseys by a formal act of the tribe; swaying for a number of years the Grand Council of the Delawares; at one time the keeper of the archives of the Iroquois Confederacy; versed in the customs of the aborigines; adapting himself to their mode of thought and by long habit a native in many of his own ways; no Protestant missionary and but few men of any other calling ever exercised more real influence and was more sincerely honored among the Indians." -- De Schweinitz's THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DAVID ZEISBERGER.
