Er war Professor für Philosophie und Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität der Künste Berlin. Seine Publikationen, die sich u. a. mit der Kritik am Neoliberalismus beschäftigen, wurden in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt. Ohne dass es in Deutschland zur Kenntnis genommen worden ist, hat sich Byung-Chul Han inzwischen zu einem Philosophen internationalen Ranges entwickelt: »Der meistgelesene lebende deutsche Philosoph der Gegenwart ist Koreaner: Byung-Chul Han.« (El Pais) Heute herrscht überall eine Algophobie, eine generalisierte Angst vor Schmerzen. ‎L'auteur (1927-2001) est un anthropologue américain renommé pour ses travaux sur le matérialisme culturel. Ses études ethnologiques sur les populations de la Bahia amazonienne et d'autres régions du Brésil ainsi que du Mozambique portent sur le concept de culture. Il était directeur du département d'anthropologie à l'Université Columbia à New York. — "«Vaches, cochons, guerres et sorcières», et en fait bien d'autres, dont les adeptes du culte du Cargo et Jésus-Christ soi-même, constituent le sujet d'un livre-limite, celui qu'il est permis d'écrire en donnant un déploiement maximum au principe d'après lequel, en dernière instance, tout phénomène humain relève d'une explication très simple. Marvin Harris pousse à l'extrême un principe qui, d'une certaine façon, sous-tend l'ensemble de l'empirisme anglo-saxon. Les heurts ne datent pas d'aujourd'hui entre les tenants de ce courant et ceux qui, au contraire, dans la tradition philosophique «continentale», professent que tout phénomène humain relève d'une explication très complexe. Pour Harris, tout fait social trouve sa justification dans sa simple existence. Une existence ponctuelle ne suffit cependant pas : il faut perdurer. Ce qui a disparu (le zélotisme palestinien, par exemple) ou n'a jamais eu lieu (l'élevage du porc en Palestine) était ou aurait été non adaptatif ; au contraire, ce qui tient ou a tenu pour un temps est ou était adaptatif, aussi extravagant que cela puisse paraître quelquefois. Ainsi pour les vaches sacrées des Indiens : «L'amour des vaches et son cortège de symboles sacrés et de doctrines saintes protègent le fermier contre un calcul qui ne serait «rationnel» qu'à court terme» (p. 21). (...) Comme on peut s'en douter, un type d'interprétation, qui paraît ingénieux quand il s'agit d'expliquer les particularités d'un certain mode d'élevage de bovins ou de porcins, semble de moins en moins convaincant – ou franchement farfelu – quand il veut rendre compte de faits qui s'éloignent de plus en plus des processus primaires de production, par exemple la réussite du christianisme, la chasse aux sorcières ou le succès de librairie de Castaneda..."
