Das' with autograph signature by Das. Folio. .(34,5 x 22 cm). In English. 50 p. (text in 25 p.). It's written on the last page 'Basilmistir' [i.e. It's printed]. Some autograph corrections on text. Tarak Chandra Das was an anthropologist of Calcutta University. He did his Masters' from Calcutta University in 'Ancient Indian History and Culture' and joined the then newly founded Department of Anthropology at Calcutta University (the first Department of Anthropology in India) in 1921 as a research scholar and then he became lecturer in 1923 and finally retired as a Reader from the Department in 1963. Das conducted extensive fieldworks in Chotanagpur in the then Bihar and in Assam. Das was interested in the application of Anthropology. In 1941, he delivered the Sectional Presidential address in the Anthropology Section of the Indian Science Congress on the 'Cultural Anthropology in the Service of the Individual and the Nation'. In the address, Das elaborately charted out the future path of Indian anthropology with a description of the social dynamics of the tribal and peasant societies in India in the context of the role of anthropologists in nation building. Two books written by T.C. Das bears testimony of his observation and collection of data through anthropological fieldwork. One is his monograph on the Purum Kuki tribe of north-eastern India. and the other is on the Great Bengal Famine during the Second World War.[Bengal famine (1943):As revealed in a survey of the destitutes of Calcutta,1949]. Both the books were published by the University of Calcutta. Northeast India provided windows for Das in his applied anthropological approach towards nation building. The Purum monograph was one of the most comprehensive works produced by an anthropologist on the life of a small tribe and it became a major source of data for a number of world-renowned social anthropologists of Great Britain and USA in later years. The book on the famine of Bengal which took place in 1943 was a unique and rare first-hand study done by any anthropologist or social scientist on the victims of one of the greatest tragedies of India under the colonial rule. An earlier version of the book was discussed in the then British Parliament and some of the recommendations advanced by Das were adopted by the Famine Inquiry Commission in 1944 formed by the colonial government for the prevention of future famines in India. The Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen cited Das's original work in his famous book Poverty and Famines. Throughout the book, one finds description by Das wherein dry quantitative data,graphs and tables were made alive with human stories of 'grim struggles between hunger and finer sentiments of love, affection and kindness'. Das had conducted intensive fieldwork among three tribes in eastern India, viz. Ho, Kharia and Bhumij during 1927-31 and had shown how these tribes maintained their sociocultural identities. Apart from his success as an ethnographer,Das was also an armchair anthropologist. His studies on culture around fish in Bengal, museums and dowry restriction law provided examples of his keen interest in dealing with archival materials and written texts in social anthropological and sociological studies. [MANUSCRIPT] Autograph document stamped by Ottoman accounting manager 'Ahmed Vefik' related to sunken Tokat [Tokad] torpedo boat during in the Battle of Preveza. The Battle of Preveza, in September 1911, was the first naval engagement fought during the Italo-Turkish War. Five Italian Soldato-class destroyers encountered five Ottoman ships off the Greek port of Preveza. Over the course of two days, four of the Turkish vessels present were sunk or captured and the city was bombarded. On September 29, just after the beginning of the war, the Italian fleet in the Ionian Sea began searching for Ottoman warships. At about 4:00 pm, an hour or so after war was declared, five Italian destroyers under Prince Luigi Amedeo, sighted two enemy torpedo boats at sea in between Corfu and Preveza. Outnumbered, the Ottomans opened fire but soon after chose to flee without making any hits. The torpedo boat Tokat steered north chased by three destroyers while Anatolia headed south followed by the remaining two Italian ships. After several moments of firing Tokat ran aground near Nicopolis. She had been hit fifteen times, caught on fire, and was completely destroyed by additional Italian rounds. Nine men were killed, including the ship's captain.

Genova dalla Stamperia Francese, e italiana 1797 (Anno I della libertà ligure). In 8°; pp. 231 + (1); bella legatura in mezza pelle coeva verde con titt. in oro e decorazioni ai piccoli ferri al dorso e piatti marmorizzati (Qualche pagina leggermente ed uniformemente brunita, come tutti gli esemplari conosciuti, a causa della qualità della carta e nel complesso esemplare in ottime condizioni di conservazione). Seconda edizione, ma prima stampata in Italia di uno delle opere più importanti dell’illuminismo. Nel 1796 Giovanni Menini stampò, a Parigi, la prima edizione in italiano. Nel 1797 uscirono 7 edizioni ma questa di Genova è la seconda edizione in italiano [ma la prima stampata in Italia] antecedente anche quella veneziana stampata dal Rota. A testimoniare l’antecedenza dell’edizione genovese su quella veneziana è che ambedue le edizioni portano la traduzione di Celestino Massucco, celebre traduttore e professore di Poetica dell’Università di Genova e che visse e lavorò, pubblicando varie opere, solo nella città ligure. «Il Contratto sociale» edito per la prima volta nel 1762 ebbe un numero ridotto di edizioni a causa delle idee rivoluzionarie in esso professate, prima fra tutte l’idea che lo Stato debba essere diretta emanazione della volontà po-polare, fino allo scoppio della Rivoluzione Francese quando le intenzioni rivoluzionarie furono fortemente ispirate all’opera sociale del grande filosofo illuminista. In questo periodo l’opera ebbe numerose edizioni e fu tradotta per la prima volta in numerose lingue contribuendo ad esaltare le idee democratiche che serpeggiavano per l’Europa. Anticipò inoltre molti degli elementi che, tra la fine del XVIII e l’inizio del XIX secolo, avrebbero caratterizzato il Romanticismo, e segnò profondamente tutta la riflessione politica, sociologica, morale, psicologica e pedagogica successiva, alcuni elementi della sua visione etica essendo stati ripresi in particolare da Immanuel Kant. Questo e altri suoi scritti (soprattutto l’Émile, sulla pedagogia) vennero condannati e contribuirono a isolare Rousseau rispetto all’ambiente culturale del suo tempo. Le sue relazioni con tutti gli intellettuali illuministi suoi contemporanei, oltre che con le istituzioni della Repubblica di Ginevra, finirono per deteriorarsi a causa di incomprensioni, sospetti e litigi, e Rousseau morì in isolamento quasi completo.
