‎Headley Stephen C.:‎

‎From Cosmogony to Exorcism in a Javanese Genesis.‎

‎-Oxford University Press 2000-. Oxford Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology. First edition. xiii250 pages with index. Illustrated. Cloth. Fine in fine dustjacket. In 1925 the influential Dutch anthropologist W.H. Rassers posed the question of the relationship of myth to ritual taking as his case study the Javanese myth of the birth of the man-eating demon Kala. The light shed by this myth and its re-enactment on the social morphology of Java was immediately the subject of debate among students of Javanese culture. In this text Stephen C. Headley translates and studies ritual and myth in their variant forms. He expands illuminatingly upon Rasser's general proposition that the movement from cosmogony to exorcism founds fundamental social forms within which values circulate in Javanese society. Richly detailed descriptions confirm the permanence of these networks of circulating values in modern-day Java and their persistence in the face of contemporary individualism. -Oxford University Press, 2000- hardcover‎

‎Forth Gregory:‎

‎Dualism and Hierarchy. Processes of Binary Combination in Keo Society‎

‎-Oxford University Press 2001-. Oxford Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology. First edition. xix341 pages with index. Illustrated. Cloth. Near fine in very good dustjacket. Society in the Keo region of the eastern Indonesian island of Flores reveals a pervasive pairing of villages clans and other groups. Apart from introducing a hitherto undescribed population this study deriving from fieldwork conducted by the author over a period of 15 years analyses a form of society that has occupied anthropologists since the inception of their discipline: morphological dualism or dual organization. Drawing on a notion of encompassment inspired by Dumont's theory of 'hierarchy' the author interprets dualistic social forms as products of a continuous process of combination and a tendency to create binary wholes through the partial assimilation of junior by senior partners. While Keo exemplifies a variant of a widespread eastern Indonesian pattern of binary classification and asymmetric marriage alliance the analysis shows how Keo morphological dualism cannot be reduced to the categories of a dual classification nor to unique or exclusive forms of reciprocity or functional complementarity. Exploring these issues through original ethnographic studies of numerous Keo domains and settlements the book is of critical relevance not just to dualism but to a variety of continuing concerns in contemporary social anthropology including the concept of 'descent' the social construction of inequality and connections between ritual practice especially animal sacrifice and social order. -Oxford University Press, 2001- hardcover‎

‎Goldman Laurence:‎

‎The Culture of Coincidence. Accident and Absolute Liability in Huli.‎

‎-Clarendon Press 1993-. First edition. xvi443 pages with index. Cloth. Fine in dustjacket. In this study Laurence Goldman examines the ground between law linguistics and anthropology to provide a full-length ethnography on the grammar and pragmatics of the rarely acknolwedged or researched topic of accident. He challenges two long-standing preconceptions about tribal society - that there is absolute liability for deaths and that indigenous theories of misfortune lack concepts of pure accident or coincidence. Utilizing transcript case data from the Huli people of Papua New Guinea Dr. Goldman explores the linguistic encoding of intentionality causality responsibility and control to show how actors dispute in volitional murder or non-volitional coincidence idioms. He examines causativization case marking adverbs why-questions and verb choice to reveal how intentions and not just consequences are an inevitable focus of all conflict talk. He also examines the notion of "state of mind" in terms of Hull ideas of desire motive purpose and reason. Dr Goldman concludes that with regard to the concept of accident Western and non-Western juristic ideologies exhibit startling similarities; his study has implications for the way we describe the world views of other cultures. -Clarendon Press, 1993- hardcover‎

‎The Continuing Demographic Transition‎

‎-Clarendon Press 29 Jan 1998-. First edition. xi453 pages with index. Cloth. Fine in very good dustjacket. From the perspective of human society one of the most significant occurrences of the twentieth century has been the demographic transition --- the movement from tragic and wastefully high death and birth rates to low rates in many countries. Many other countries however are still at only the early or intermediate stages of this process. In these countries means need to be found to accelerate the transition. This book brings new evidence to bear on aspects of the demographic trasition with contributions from leading demographers anthropologists sociologists and historians. The book ranges widely over the history and current experience of both developed and developing countries with particular emphasis on Asia and Africa. The new field of anthropological demography is strongly represented with contributions challenging much conventional wisdom. -Clarendon Press (29 Jan 1998)- hardcover‎

‎Cruikshank Julie:‎

‎The Social Life of Stories. Narrative and Knowledge in the Yukon Territory.‎

‎-University of Nebraska Press 1998-. xxi211 pages with index. Cloth. Fine in dustjacket. In this theoretically sophisticated study of indigenous oral narratives Julie Cruikshank moves beyond the text to explore the social significance of storytelling. Circumpolar Native peoples today experience strikingly different and often competing systems of narrative and knowledge. These systems include traditional oral stories; the authoritative literate voice of the modern state; and the narrative forms used by academic disciplines to represent them to outsiders. Pressured by other systems of narrative and truth how do Native peoples use their stories and find them still meaningful in the late twentieth century Why does storytelling continue to thrive What can anthropologists learn from the structure and performance of indigenous narratives to become better academic storytellers themselvesCruikshank addresses these questions by deftly blending the stories gathered from her own fieldwork with interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives on dialogue and storytelling including the insights of Walter Benjamin Mikhail Bakhtin and Harold Innis. Her analysis reveals the many ways in which the artistry and structure of storytelling mediate between social action and local knowledge in indigenous northern communities. Julie Cruikshank is a professor of anthropology at the University of British Columbia. She is the author of "Life Lived Like a Story: Life Stories of Three Yukon Native Elders" Nebraska 1990 winner of the 1992 MacDonald Prize. -University of Nebraska Press, 1998- hardcover‎

‎Castle Gregory:‎

‎Modernism and the Celtic Revival.‎

‎-Cambridge University Press 2001-. First edition. viii312 pages with index. Cloth. Fine in dustjacket. Gregory Castle examines the impact of anthropology on the work of Irish Revivalists such as W. B. Yeats John M. Synge and James Joyce. Castle argues that anthropology enabled Irish Revivalists to confront and combat British imperialism even as these Irish writers remained ambivalently dependent on the cultural and political discourses they sought to undermine. Castle shows how Irish Modernists employed textual and rhetorical strategies first developed in anthropology to translate reassemble and edit oral and folk-cultural material. In doing so he claims they confronted and undermined inherited notions of identity which Ireland often a site of ethnographic curiosity throughout the nineteenth century had been subject to. Drawing on a wide range of post-colonial theory this book should be of interest to scholars in Irish studies post-colonial studies and Modernism. -Cambridge University Press, 2001- hardcover‎

Challenging the notion that modernization is a homogenizing process Susan Rogers contents that in the course of large-scale transformations communities often reproduce and strengthen distinctive cultural and social features. This monograph is about the Canela Indians of the municipio of Barra do Corda in the state of Maranhao Brazil and also about the neighboring Apanyekra who are culturally very similar and are used here for comparisons. The Canela are also known as the Ramkoamekra-Canela or the Eastern Timbira. These names were given to them in the monograph "The Eastern Timbira" by Brazil's great ethnologist Curt Nimuendaju 1946. The present monograph referred to herein as the "Canela Introduction" is a product of 64 months of fieldwork over a period of 22 years. It is the first volume of several in a potential series.
